Snow alerts - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Due to the new GDPR regulations I have been advised that I have to seek informed consent to keep sending out snow alert emails from 25th May 2018.

If you wish to still receive these emails then please simply reply to this email and type YES in the header. I am removing all the emails from my list and starting afresh so you will not receive these unless I hear from you.

On my part I will never give or sell your data to anyone (not even Cambridge Analytica) and will only use it for ski related information. This will include snow alerts, snow reports, work party information and other events related to WSC such as special events, discount nights etc. I do not keep any data other than your email addresses and do not have any other personal information. If at any time you get fed up of hearing about how wonderful the skiing is at Weardale simply reply and put REMOVE in the header - I won't be offended.

Whilst I have your attention the first of our summer work parties is a week on Saturday (2nd June) where amongst other activities we will be removing a lot of old snow fencing in readiness. If you are available for all or part of the day we will be starting at 10am and all are welcome whether members or not. The feel is pretty dry at the moment (relative) but would still recommend sturdy shoes/boots and warm clothes as it was freezing up there today!

Snow report day 25

Well we made day 25 and had a fairly typical Weardale ski day with a bit of everything. We had some ice, some fresh powder, some grass, some mud but also beautiful blue skies. Skiing was OK first thing and the gully and bottom of Black Scar still ski-able but you could see the snow melting as temperatures soared and we called it a day at lunchtime and it looks like that is the end of another good season. Hope you have all enjoyed it.

Skiing Thurs 5th April

Looks like the snow has fallen along with the temperatures and the webcam looks like good coverage so we are planning to open the tows from 0930. The road is likely to be tricky with snow and possibly ice so 4wd or chains may be necessary. It is forecast to get mild by the afternoon so we may well close early so if you are coming do not leave it late.

There has been reasonable snowfall this evening in Weardale and forecast for a sunny day tomorrow with temperature down to -4 or -5 so we may be able to run the tows tomorrow but will check the webcam in the morning and update this message and the twitter feed at 0730.

Will we make day 25???

End of season?

Looks like this could be the end of an excellent season with 24 days skiing and some of the best gully and black scar skiing for a few years thanks to the beast from the east part 1 + 2. We opened today and managed to get a good morning before the spring like snow became summer like snow. The gully and black scar were still in great shape but with warmer weather predicted it looks like it all going to disappear pretty quickly. The good news however is that you are all welcome to join us at the summer work parties as there will be loads of work needing to be done. I will advertise the dates as soon as we agree them and there will be jobs for every level of skill and strength. They are usually good fun and a great way to get to know other members.

Skiing Tuesday 3rd April ??

We had an inspection of the slopes this afternoon and conditions were reasonably good with all the runs having sufficient cover for skiing and some deep drifts. Snow was spring-like and it won't take much for it to disappear.

We might open up tomorrow morning for a few hours if too much doesn't disappear overnight but expect to close by 1-2pm when it is forecast to get quite mild. Please check the webcam before travelling.

The road was tricky today with wet snow but had cleared a bit on the return. Not sure what it will be like tomorrow but 4wd or chains may be necessary unless a lot has gone in which case 2wd with winter tyres will be OK. If we open we hope to start at 0930.

April snow and exciting new adventure talk

Firstly there has been fresh snow at Swinhope leading to the possibility of skiing in the next few days. If forecasts are accurate then Sunday might be a possibility and also next week also - keep watching the webcams.

Hope you don't mind me adding in a promotion to an exciting adventure talk/exhibition coming up on Friday 20th April in Newcastle which is being organised by one of our members and also features one of our members plus Jenny Jones, Olympic snowboarder - details below and even a discount for WSC members.

Those who attended the WSC AGM at the Honest Lawyer a couple of years ago will have had the pleasure of seeing an amazing slideshow talk from long standing WSC member Anto Baird. Anto had recently returned from a trip to South Georgia with phenomenal photos from the same place as an episode of the BBC's Blue Planet was shot, but instead of just focusing on the wildlife Anto went there to go ski touring, and unlike Shackleton- he came back! One of our other members, James Cummings, has been organising an adventure talks series which will include Anto's work in exhibition format, but the event also has another star attraction (!) as the first person to win an Olympic medal in snowboarding, Jenny Jones, will be speaking. Coming fresh off the back of the BBC PyeongChang Olympics broadcast team, Jenny is a British snow-sports superstar. Those who came and saw fellow BBC broadcaster Graham Bell speak at our anniversary party will doubtless enjoy this event. In an extract from their website:
