Skiing Sunday 28 December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Approximately 20 people turned up today and enjoyed some good weather which unfortunately was not matched by the conditions which were marginal at best. There was a thin covering of snow but the temperatures were not as low as predicted which made the skiing harder. There was little snow on F2 so we spent the day on F1 which was skiable and at least it blew away the Christmas cobwebs.

Until we get more snow the tows will not be running. Happy New Year to everyone.

ps photo of the day will be put on Facebook later tonight!

Skiing Sunday 28 December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

There has been a little new snow overnight giving a thin covering. Temperatures are predicted to be below zero all day so we may be able to ski on it but it won't be great conditions. We are planning to open from 10:30am though may well close early if conditions dictate.
The road may well be icy so be prepared on remember if using chains put them on before the steep climb.

Skiing this weekend

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

We had a great day today, especially the morning with beautiful weather and crisp fresh snow which although a bit thin in places was perfectly skiable. We had about 60 members today, several of them new members, and nearly everyone managed the road which was a bit tricky with sheet ice over large sections. Can I remind people to put chains on either at the bottom in the lay-by just before you turn up the road or at the top of the first long incline where you can pull in off the road and put the chains on. A couple of people blocked the road to put chains on today and once cars behind get stopped it can be tricky to get going again so please try and think of other road users.
Sadly it doesn't look as if we will get skiing tomorrow as the forecast is for milder temperatures, rain and stronger winds on Sunday but we will review the situation if the forecast changes.
Have a look on the WSC facebook site for a few photos from today.

Skiing Saturday 13 December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

With the recent snow 2 board members have attended today and managed to get some pisting done. Snow cover is reasonable though a lot depends on how cold it gets tonight. The webcam looking up F2 is not working so the picture is old and conditions are better than they appear - F1 camera is working fine.
We are planning to open on Saturday from 10am - please note members only so bring your membership cards. There were a few issues with F1 tow today not running smoothly - hopefully just the fuel filter needing a change so all being well will be running ok tomorrow. Don't expect fantastic conditions but at least we will get the first skiing of the season. The forecast is for milder wetter weather on Sunday so it is unlikely to last long!

1st snow report of the season

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi everyone and welcome to all the new members to the first snow alert of the season. If you have been looking at the webcams you will note that we have had a covering of snow over the last 24 hours with more predicted this week. Unfortunately very strong winds are also predicted, especially for Wednesday which means that even if the snow is good enough to ski the wind will probably prevent us from opening. It is however a very promising start and the forecast is for the cold weather to hang around for a while so keep an eye on the webcam and weather forecasts.

For those of you who have not rejoined I am afraid membership is now full though we will take day members on weekdays (other than bank holidays) but please remember weekends are strictly for members only. If you do plan to visit midweek, please check we are open before travelling and check the answerphone for road conditions (chains sometimes needed). Please book your day passes via the online booking system on the website (www.skiweardale.com) and present the printout to a tow operator when you arrive before skiing - we are pretty obvious with bright orange jackets with Tow Operator on the back! Here's hoping for a great season.

For those of you interested the new Warren Miller film is being shown at both Durham Gala and Newcastle Tyneside theatre this Thursday 11 December - http://warrenmiller.co.uk/tickets

The format for the evening will be a brief business meeting followed by a talk and slide show by Stuart Gallagher who many of you will know. Stu is an intrepid explorer with many expeditions, first summits etc to his name and the theme for the night is a medley of adventures include Climbing in Yosemite, Kayaking in Glacier Bay, Traverse of Mount Waddington Range (British Columbia) and the Dangers of the 'Road less travelled' (apparently meeting up with woolly bears etc.).
The agenda, minutes and accounts have all been sent out to to the registered email addresses of members but if anyone has not received them I am happy to forward them on.

Apart from a few small jobs outstanding we are ready for the season and can open as soon as we get any snow. To whet the appetite here are links to a couple of ski videos. One is from Kevin entitled "Weardale 2013"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlFwdNG1G4E and the other is an edited version of the early days of WSC from 1963 to 1971 which was shown at our 50th Anniversary meal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6t7__zkJq4

LD Mountain centre in Newcastle are also offering WSC members 20% off full priced winter clothing and equipment + free delivery by using the discount code SNOW15 at the checkout but hurry the offer ends 4th November.

Last few places and discount evening

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A final reminder to all members who have not renewed membership yet, we are nearly full with less than 90 places left after which time we will close. Existing members have until the end of this month to renew without paying the joining/late fee but if you leave it that late you will be disappointed as the way it is looking I think we will close in the next week or so. A big thank you to all those who have renewed and hope we offer you a fantastic season. For any new members wanting to join please act soon via the sportident website - https://www.sientries.co.uk/event.php?event_id=1595

For those members who joined in the last week please accept our apologies for any delays getting your membership cards sent out as we are waiting for more cards from the printers which should be arriving in the next few days.

The final preparation for the season is taking place this weekend with the hangars being put on and then hopefully all ready for the snow, which has already fallen in Scotland. Another big thank you to all who attended these last two work parties which were very productive.

Date for your diary -Our AGM is being held on Monday 10th November at The Honest Lawyer, Durham, which will entail a (hopefully) brief meeting followed by another exciting slide show and presentation by Stu Gallagher. More details will be sent out prior to the event.

Work party Sunday 28 September

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

We had a very successful work party last Sunday with a good turnout and a great day on the fells. A lot of work was done preparing for the season which included repairing bridges, putting in drainage, replacing belts and other repairs to the ski lifts, snow fence repairs, replacement of lodge windows as well as many other jobs. A big thank you to all who attended. There is however still a lot to do so we need as many hands as possible this Sunday to try and complete most of the outstanding tasks so please try and attend if you can. The weather forecast is good so it should remain dry and reasonable temperature.

Membership renewals are rolling in fast and most have now been processed and sent out. More members have joined to date than they had at this time last year which is pleasing and we are well over half full already so thanks to all who have rejoined already. From 1 October we will open to new members and once we reach full capacity (750 members) we close so this is a gentle reminder to all current members not leave it too late!

For anyone interested there are a couple of courses coming up locally on outdoor first aid and ... Inspirational training are holding 2 day courses in West Denton, Newcastle over the next couple of months - http://www.inspirationaltraining.co.uk/ and BASP are holding 2 day courses in Keswick in October and November - http://www.basp.org.uk/basp_course/EM2/
These are not related to Weardale Ski Club but I thought some of you may be interested.

Finally Aviemore Ski and Snowboard Hire have closed their shop in Aviemore and are selling off their equipment - skis, boards, boots, boot driers, workshop equipment etc. If interested look on their site -http://www.aviemoreskihire.co.uk/ or contact them directly at - carol@aviemoreskihire.co.uk

Membership renewal and work parties 21 + 28 September

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi Everyone,
A quick update on the renewal process. Currently approximately 200 members have renewed. All those received are being processed but due to the high numbers and a few delays outside our control it may be a few more days before these get posted out so bear with us.There was a slight glitch when the discount code was added to the website (this allows existing members to avoid paying the renewal fee) so it had to be removed and a new discount code sent out - apologies to those who tried to renew during this period and were rejected - it is all working fine now. For new members we open membership at the start of October so will send out an email then. Existing members have until then to guarantee renewal and after 1st October is becomes first come first served. If there are places left at the end of October (unlikely given the last few years) then there is a late fee of £20 for existing members (this does not apply to new members who pay a one off £20 joining fee).

The work parties are vital to ensure that the club can offer excellent facilities to members but to achieve this a huge amount of work needs to be done. I have listed below a few of the jobs needing to be done and if any of you can volunteer for one or more of them them please let me know. If you don't want to specify a job but wish to just help out then please try and attend on either Sunday 21st or 28th September - all work parties start at 10am meeting at the car park. Some of the jobs below require specific skills but others just require you to be able to hit a nail or wield a shovel or paint brush

Steve

1)     Fit new track to snow blower – missing track tensioner nut must be replaced first. Take care when levering on as any nick on the edge of the track will cause it to rip apart (this was the cause of the last failure!)

2)     Fit new battery to generator

3)     Fit new alternator to KB25.

4)     F2 belt guard to de-rust and paint

5)     F1 Pylon 5 (and possibly more) has lots of exposed rust which needs scraping and painting.

6)     F2 stop board needs repairing (spare boards in lodge workshop)

7)     All bull wheels to be checked for rust and re-painted where necessary.

8)     Some bridge repairs are required.

9)     Scrap fencing to be collected and brought down to roadside.

10)  Clubhouse windows – replace (in hand).

11)  Plantation trees require some TLC.

12)  Fencing & ditching

13)  Fit strap hinges to Eric's hut door.

£12,000 to get married

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

If anyone is planning to get married and fancies £12000 towards their wedding the email copied below from the BBC may be of interest. Come to think of it even if you weren't planning to get married might be worth it!

My name is Sam and I am emailing you from a TV production company called Renegade Pictures based in London – we produce the BAFTA nominated series'Don't Tell the Bride'.

The reason for my email is we have just reopened our casting for the show and we would really love to feature a couple on the show who have an interest in skiing and snowboarding.

We are particularly looking for a couple who would love to feature in our one off Christmas special. This episode goes out by itself separate from the main series and normally attracts the most viewers/press attention.

If we manage to find a couple with a skiing/snowboarding interest there may be a possibility to feature your venue in the episode.

I wondered if it would be possible to post something about this either on your social media or on a noticeboard that you may have at the centre to see if we can build any interest? I have a casting flyer that I can send over to you…

The premise of the show would remain the same: the groom is given three weeks and a free £12,000 budget to plan an entire wedding from scratch without the brides involvement.

More info on the show can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00d7mtr

Please let me know if any of this is a possibility – feel free to call/email me to discuss further!

Many Thanks

WSC work parties and membership renewal

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi Everyone,
Hope you all had a good summer and the poor August didn't spoil things. Looks like we are in for a good September which means great weather for the next 2 work parties which we are holding on Sunday 21 + 28th September. There is loads of work to be done and we need as many hands as possible. The last 2 work parties were very poorly attended and if we hope to get the necessary work done we will need a lot more of you to turn up so PLEASE try to attend at least one of them. They all start at 10am meeting at the car park. All materials and equipment will be provided so just bring packed lunch, old clothes and sturdy shoes/boots.
Membership renewals open from Monday 1 September and Sportident are sending out an email to all last years members. Please check your emails and if you cannot see an email check your spam box. If you do not get a reminder within the next 2 weeks please let me know. As in previous seasons we are giving members a month to renew during which time we will guarantee membership. From the 1st October we will open to new membership applications and it will then become "first come first served" so after 1st October renewal cannot be guaranteed. If places remain unfilled from 1st November then a late joining fee of £20 will also apply. Please note we are keeping membership fees the same as last year and indeed it has remained the same for several years now. I believe that at £35 for an adult membership we are by far the best value around. Allenheads which only has a short rope tow charges £35 a year and Raise and Yad Moss who have one tow each charge £55 a year (I believe that is their current rate) so with 2 lifts (3 if you include the portable tow), a huge expanse of varied terrain and north facing slopes you must agree it sounds pretty good value! In addition our weather guru from Cowshill (Ivan) has reminded me that last time the Icelandic volcano erupted in 2010 we had a cracking season and look what is happening over there again - your alpine ski trip may be cancelled due to ash cloud but we will remain open at WSC whatever happens in Iceland!

Work parties this weekend

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi Everyone
Just a reminder that we are holding work parties on both Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July and need as many volunteers as possible as there is a lot of work to be done. Our last 2 work parties attracted a total of 2 volunteers which out of a membership of nearly 800 is pretty poor. I know I say this every year but all the work (and believe me there is a lot done) is done by volunteers. We, as the committee, are in charge of organising the work that needs to be done but as members of the club we call upon you to come and help with the work, please. We are a non profit making club owned and run by its members, ie you and me, and the only way we can continue without a huge rise in the annual membership fee, is to do the work ourselves to keep the costs down. As you will see a lot of our equipment is very old (some of it 40 or 50 years old) but to replace with new would be prohibitive. A new Pistebasher costs in excess of £250,000, (and that is for a small one!), so we have to make do with second hand equipment and maintain it and repair it whenever we can. We also need to groom the slopes as well as we can by cutting the grass, removing rocks, repairing and adding new snow fencing, treating all the timber and metalware etc.
This weekend we are planning to mainly get more fence repairs and new snow fencing as well as some ditching done but there are also a few more technical jobs such as getting the Lynx snowmobile to start, replacing the alternator on the smaller pistebasher, some maintenance of the hydraulics on the large pistebasher, replacing flail mower blades etc.
If you feel you can help with any of these or can just offer a pair of hands for 1/2 a day or a full day then please try and attend one day. Work parties start at 10am meeting at the car park though we generally get there a little earlier.

Work parties 26th + 27th July

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi everyone,
I hope you are all enjoying the lovely summer so far and you are probably not giving much thought to skiing but we do need to get a lot of maintenance and repair work done before the winter. We are holding our 2nd weekend of work parties on Saturday + Sunday 26/27th July and need as many helpers as possible. All work parties start at 10am meeting at the car park. Our last work party in June was very poorly attended (partly due to me accidentally only sending out the message to half of you!) but even then 2 out of 400 members is a poor return.
This work party is going to be mainly manual work including some ditching, fencing (new and repairs) and replacement of the 2 fuel tanks so no skills needed though there may be one or two more technical jobs also.
Finally Geoff Green (geoff.green5@gmail.com) has 3 or 4 pairs of skis and 3 or 4 pairs of boots that he no longer wants (at least he did in March when he emailed me) - free to  good home. Skis are 180 and 190 Atomic carve skis about 10 years old with bindings. He lives in Tynemouth so if anyone is interested please contact him directly.
Please can you let me know if you plan to attend either or both work parties so that we can have some indication of numbers.

Summer work parties 21/22 June

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi Everybody,
The first of the summer work parties will take place next weekend 21/22 June. We have loads of maintenance and repair work to do, some skilled and some non skilled so there will be something for all abilities. Attendance at work parties used to be compulsory for all members but this was dropped a few years ago but we do desperately need volunteers to help out so if you are free on one or both days please try and attend. All you need are enthusiasm, dirty clothes, good footwear and a packed lunch.
Work parties start at 10am meeting at the car park but any help even for 1/2 a day is welcome.
Please let me know if you plan to attend so we have an idea about numbers (no need to reply if you cannot make it as that would mean receiving 780 emails!).

50th Anniversary meal

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

We have had an excellent response for the 50th Anniversary meal so far - thanks to all who have replied and booked. Applications are due to close in the next few days so if you are hoping to attend this is your last chance - any applications received after Monday 10th March will be too late I am afraid as we have to give the hotel notice of numbers and menu choices.
If any of you  have any significant allergies please let me know and I will inform the hotel.
We are hoping to have a display of old ski equipment spanning the 50 years that WSC has existed so if any of you have any old equipment that you are happy for us to use then please let me know.
On the evening we are also planning to have an auction of ski memorabilia which will hopefully also add to the entertainment.
Skis free to a good home
I have been given 2 pairs of skis from an ex member, Mike, which are free to anyone who may find a use for them. They are Dynastar Ultra 180 + 190 with look bindings and 2 pairs of boots - Salomon SX61 340-345 and Meindl 43/45. They can be collected from my house in Stanhope.
Also, Geoff, from Tynemouth has 3 or 4 pairs of skis and boots free to collect. They are @ 10 years old - Atomic carve skis 180/190 with bindings. I don't have any more details but if anyone is interested I can forward your email to him.

Possible skiing Sunday 2 March

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

There is a remote possibility of skiing on Sunday if the forecast snow arrives overnight though I am not optimistic. We will look at the webcams in the morning at 7:30 and update the answerphone.

50th Anniversary Dinner

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi everyone,
Sadly still little to report on the snow front though we did have a good covering of about 3 inches this morning which disappeared by lunchtime, which sums up this season so far! I haven't lost hope yet and the forecasters are predicting colder weather in the next week with some snow so we may be lucky yet?
The 50th Anniversary meal is filling up fast and we are not far short of 200 people attending. Please note that we are closing applications on 10 March so if you are intending to join us then act quickly or you may be disappointed. It will be a long wait for our 100th anniversary!!
We are hoping to display photographs of WSC (old and new) on screens throughout the dinner so if any of you have photos that you would like to share with us then please email them to Steve Luard at spluard@gmail.com preferably in jpeg format as soon as possible.
Look forward to seeing many of you in a few weeks time.

Skiing Wed 19 Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

The intention is to open up tomorrow for skiing from 10am but looking at the webcams a lot of the snow has gone and it is likely to be limited. The towline up F1 is complete but some of the runs have significant bare patches. It is likely that F2 will be better. Please check the answerphone in the morning before travelling in case the situation changes.

50th Anniversary meal with Graham Bell as guest of honour

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

I hope you all enjoyed our celebrations on the slopes this weekend. It was certainly very well attended with about 150 members there and a great atmosphere  with BBQ, music and sunshine. The snow was pretty good as well. We are considering opening up on Wednesday if the snow doesnt deteriorate too much but will make a decision tomorrow and update the answerphone and website.

Tickets for the WSC 50th Anniversary meal at The Ramside Hall are selling fast and we are already over half full so if members want to join in then please get your applications in soon. The invitation is now being opened to all so I expect the remaining tickets to sell out in the next week or so. I apologise if some of you get this email twice but we are sending it out via different email lists to try and ensure as many members get it as possible. Attached are the invitations, menus and reply forms. Please remember to select your choices for all members of your booking, enclose cheque, SAE and seating preferences (if any). Feel free to forward this email to friends and family who may be interested.

Ski report Sun 16 Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A great day today with about 150 people turning up to enjoy some fantastic weather and good skiing and joining in with our 50th anniversary celebrations. It was great to see one of our founder members, John Stevenson, joining in the celebrations. We had music, courtesy of Durham Events (aka James Cummings), a fantastic BBQ with sausages, burgers, mulled wine etc prepared and presented by master-chefs John De Muschamp and Judy Tait. This was accompanied by blue skies and great company and it really felt like we were in the French Alps somewhere. I hope all the newcomers don't expect this every week. Thanks to all those who spent all day setting it up and also thanks to those who worked to get everything working, especially Hugh who spent the entire morning getting covered in oil trying (successfully) to get F2 going after a fuel leak, but also Kevin, Steve and the others who pisted the runs and all the usual work that goes on to keep it ticking over.
The snow cover was good and varied in quality from being hard and icy to soft and heavy near the bottom but everywhere was skiable including the runs out to the far west, the far east (China run) and all the gullies. A link below to some of my photos from today and if anyone has any good photos they are happy to share then please email them to me.

Lost Keys - a set of car keys were found and handed to me - looks like a Ford car as they are very similar to our CMax keys - if anyone has lost them please let me know. They have a "return if found" tag on them which I will use if I hear nothing.

Not sure yet what the plans are for this week but there is a possibility of skiing Tuesday/Wednesday perhaps so keep an eye on the website and an ear on the answerphone.

Skiing and Celebratory BBQ Sun 16 Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Reports from today say that the snow has survived the rain and wind and although there are a few bare patches it should be skiable tomorrow and if we get a cold frost tonight as predicted might actually be quite good. We are planning to hold our 50th anniversary BBQ tomorrow so please come prepared with either your own BBQ food or some cash to purchase it.

Please remember that weekends are members only - we cannot accept day members.

We plan to open lifts on Sunday from 10am. The road today was pretty clear so hopefully will be ok tomorrow but as always come prepared as conditions can change quickly

Skiing this weekend 15/16th Feb + BBQ??

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

About 50 people attended today and had a good days skiing but with poor visibility at times. There is a lot of snow and we managed to get a fair bit of pisting done on Thursday night (thanks to Steve Gallagher who ran our first ever "night pisting" session just like in the Alps!).
We are hoping to open tomorrow (Saturday) from 0930 but are expecting to close early at @ 1400. The forecast is not great tomorrow with wind and rain but is better for Sunday with some sunny spells and less wind. If the snow lasts we hope to run on Sunday as well and hoping to have our BBQ but I will confirm this tomorrow. If the BBQ goes ahead you can bring your own food or we will be selling burgers + gluhwein on the day so don't forget to bring along some cash.
Please check the answerphone (01388317767) before travelling in case conditions change which is possible.

Ski update Thurs 13 Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Sorry for the late update but the tow operators were having a late session checking out the slopes and pisting the runs. There is loads of snow and a lot of drifting so you will need to take care on the road and 4WD or chains will be necessary and remember to pack a shovel. Due to forecasts of heavy snow in the middle of the day we may close early so the plan is to open earlier than usual at 9am.
Have a great day.
Steve

possible skiing Friday 14th Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

There is a possibility we may be skiing tomorrow, Friday 14th,Valentines day, but this is not confirmed yet. I will update this message @ 10pm tonight. There is lots of snow there with big drifts and tomorrow morning looks ok but heavy snow currently predicted at midday.

Ski report wed 12 Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

About 20 members enjoyed good snow today until winds and heavy snow brought skiing to a close at lunchtime. Visiblity was poor higher up but there was good cover. When we left it was snowing hard and drifting but back in Stanhope it was raining and the snow was disappearing quickly. There are very strong winds forecast on Thursday so we wont be opening then but there is a possibility of skiing on Friday and we will keep you posted. At the moment the weekend also looks good, Sunday appearing to be the best of the 2 days but the weather forecasters seem to change their minds on a daily basis so keeping looking at the webcams and ringing the answerphone.
I hope some of you saw WSC on BBC Look North last week. Paul Mooney and crew came up to the club to do some filming (when there was very little snow!) and a few of our members went up and were interviewed (and froze to death) and also judged the photograph of the month competition.
Tickets for the 50th anniversary meal are selling fast so any member who is interested should get their forms completed and returned soon. We will be opening up to non members soon and I expect us to sell out before the event, especially as you youngsters now know who Graham Bell is after seeing him presenting at the winter olympics!
Finally http://reynoldsoutdoorcentre.co.uk/ in Sunderland have got some skis for sale - see below - so if you want a cheap new pair of skis have a look.
Boarders don't forget that our sponsors this year, The Chaos, in Darlington always have good offers on for boards and clothing, up to 70% off some items.

Skiing Wed 12 Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

We have had a couple of inches snow in Stanhope today and the webcam this afternoon showed reasonable coverage at 4pm and it has snowed since then so hopefully there will be enough for skiing tomorrow. There is however a fairly brisk wind forecast and also heavy snow after lunch so we may well close early. I have no idea what the road will be like but the local roads have been a bit slippery and with the winds there may be some drifting. 4WD or chains I think would be a good idea and pack a shovel to help with parking.
We are planning to open tomorrow (Wednesday 12 Feb) from 10am but please check the answerphone before travelling in case conditions change and do not arrive late as we may close early.
We will accept day members tomorrow - please use the online day ,membership which can be accessed from the WSC website on the membership page - click the online day membership link.

Skiing report Saturday 1 Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

About 20 members turned up today and had a good few hours on better snow than expected. F1 ran about 4 hours and had good cover and was skiable all over. F2 was a little bare in places but the M1 was good and the smaller gullies were skiable though bare in places. We closed F2 early because of the wind.
Currently it is raining heavily in Stanhope so I rather suspect it will not be skiable tomorrow but we will review the webcams in the morning and if we plan to open a message will be left on the answerphone (01388 317767). The webcams are updated at 8am so have a look yourself in the morning.

Skiing Saturday 1 Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

There has been fresh snowfall today and the webcam shows reasonable coverage though the ground is very wet and not frozen so it may well be wet and heavy snow. There is also a reasonably strong wind forecast so skiing may be limited in both quality and time but we are planning to open up tomorrow (Saturday) from 10am. Please note members only - no day members at weekends.

On a separate note Phil Thompson is looking for someone to team up for a late skiing holiday from Newcastle as his wife doesnt ski and single holidays are not cheap. Anyone interested contact Phil  philandsuethompson@ntlworld.co.uk

Lack of snow report

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi everyone and a belated Happy New Year to you all. So far it has been a very frustrating season with no skiing so far despite a few brief periods of snowfall. According to Ivan, our weather boffin, we have had 15 days of snow at Swinhope this season but every time it has snowed it has either been accompanied by or followed by strong winds or rain or usually both. Very frustrating but people keep telling me that the great winter of 1947 didn't start until February and it is not uncommon for our best skiing to be February, March and April.

On a better note I can announce that celebrations of our 50th season skiing at Swinhope are proceeding very well. We have organised a formal dinner at Ramside Hall, Durham on Saturday, 29 March 2014. All members and families are welcome to attend and invitations will be sent out soon. Tickets are likely to be @£35 to include reception drink, 3 courses followed by coffee. I am also now able to announce that befitting England's premier ski club, we have managed to attract England's premier skier, Graham Bell, to be guest of honour and guest speaker which hopefully will make for a very entertaining evening.

Other celebrations of our 50th year also include a BBQ and races at Swinhope on the first weekend we have snow in February. We will provide the BBQ and Gluhwein and all you need to do is bring along whatever you want cooking on the BBQ. Again we will send out details as soon as we have snow forecast!!

Finally, if anyone knows how to service wooden skis a member, Mat from Ireshopburn would love to hear from you - notayokell@hotmail.com

Hopefully I will have better news on the skiing front in the next few weeks but in the meantime pencil 29 March in your diary.
