Snow Update Tuesday 20 December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Surprisingly the tows ran today and about 20 people enjoyed dubious conditions. I am told that F1 runs were very bare but F2 skiable. Skiing closed early as the snow softened and disappeared and skiing closed early about 2pm. Sadly for us the temperaure is set to rise to 10-12 degrees tomorrow which will wreck any chance of further skiing until the cold weather returns but 8 days in December is an excellent start to the season.
A member has lost a pair of skins from his skis recently. It was thought they were last seen hanging up in the lodge but they were not there at the weekend. If anyone hs taken them or knows where they are can you please contact me.

On behalf of Weardale Ski Club can I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope to see you on the slopes as soon as possible.

Snow Update from Saturday 17th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

The skiing today was very enjoyable. The gullies were filled with powder snow making some excellent runs in great snow. The M1 was also very good with several good routes down from the top of F2. Some of the lower pisted runs had a thin covering but were perfectly skiable and nicely pisted. Later in the day the snow froze making these runs even better. The guys have done a great job pisting the slopes and all is looking good for tomorrow. The road is a bit icy in places with some snow so 4X4, snow tyres or chains will be necessary tomorrow and please pack a  shovel. The forecast is for a thaw next week so make the most while it is here.

Tows will run from 10am tomorrrow (Sunday 18th)

Snow update Thursday 15th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

There was skiing today at Swinhope but conditions were not great. Apparently the tow lines have great compacted snow and the gullies are full of snow with some great skiing but the main runs have thin cover with bare patches. It was possible to ski from the top of F2 to the bottom of F1 but you had to chose your route well.

We are not planning to open on friday but hopefully will do so at the weekend if we get a top up of snow.

If anyone is after some cheap skis for use at Swinhope, Weardale House outdoor centre have about 60 sets of skis, boots etc for sale. See the message below. Please contact Simon directly and not me for further details.

Steve

I have around 60 sets of older child to adult sizes.  Many are unused, the remainder are barely used.

I also have a whole raft of well used children's equipment that I'm looking to sell.

To give you an idea, I'm looking for £75 for a set of skis, boots, bindings and poles.  The majority are Rossignol.  My thought was that your members might be interested in a cheap set of skis to use in more marginal conditions to preserve their best equipment, or that you may have some beginners looking to get started.

The equipment is all at Weardale House in Ireshopeburn.

P.S.  The reason for the sale?  We simply aren't using them and I urgently need to purchase other equipment such as wetsuits, ropes and so on.

Skiing Thursday

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

There has been snow falling overnight and also today so we are planning to open for skiing tomorrow (Thursday). Nobody has been up the road to check conditions on the road or the slopes so I cannot give any idea of what it will be like. However there has been a reasonable cover, forecast is for it to remain cold and tomorrows weather looks promising.

We plan to open from about 10am tomorrow.

Day visitors will be welcome tomorrow but if possible please print off a day membership form from the website (www.skiweardale.com) and complete it before travelling and bring the correct money (it makes life easier for the tow operators). Because we don't know what the road is like please bring chains and remember to pack that shovel in your boot. Also please drive straight into the parking space at a 45 degree angle to the fence as close as possible. Do not attempt to reverse into the space.

Skiing Sunday 11th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

We had a good day skiing today though the snow did deteriorate as they day went on and by end of play there were quite a few bare patches but a good base and the towlines are now very well compacted. If we get the predicted snow overnight then conditions could be good but if we get no snow then it won't be worth opening on Sunday. Best advice is to look at the webcam at 830am or ring the answerphone in the morning for the latest advice. The road was ok today though some icy patches at the top which were a bit tricky. Having watched the following link about the value of winter tyres I suspect it would be a good investment for many of you who don't already have them - http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/total_tyre_guide/259444/summer_continental_contisportcontact_3.html

Living North have written an article on skiing in Weardale in their January edition which is out now and has 5 pages about us and the other ski clubs in the North of England including some great photos from James Cummings and others. It will grace any coffee table and you can proudly show all your frends what Weardale Ski Club is like. Sadly today was a more typical Weardale skiing day but you don't have to tell them that!

The owner of the Guess watch has been found much to his relief as it was a pressie from his wife!! A pair of goggles was lost today by Lyn, so if anyone has found them please let me know.

Not sure why my writing went blue??

Skiing Saturday 10th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

There has been a light fall if snow tonight which will hopefully freshen up the slopes so we plan to open tomorrow from 10am. I cannot guarantee the quality of the snow and will update tomorrow evening once we see what it is like. I am also unsure what the road is like as there may be significant ice so drive with care.

If you need new skis/snowboards/bindings etc Nevisport are offering 20% off hardware (not entirely sure what this covers) but if interested give them a call

Skiing update Wednesday 7th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Winter has certainly arrived and we have just enjoyed our 3rd day skiing of the season. Snow has also fallen in the Scottish resorts and at long last in Europe as well which hopefully means Christmas will be OK in the Alps for those travelling abroad. For those who plan to stay in this country we will see what we can do for you!
When it started to rain last night in Stanhope, combined with the winds and milder temperatures I was expecting much of the snow to have gone today so I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived this morning to find good snow cover. The winds were a bit strong so we could only run F1 but in total managed to stay open for about 4 hours and got some good skiing with about 10 or 11 people there. Some people were seen arriving at 2:15pm when we were shutting down and turned back when they saw the lifts had stopped. This time of year it gets dark so early that we have to start clearing the slopes at 3pm at the latest so please dont arrive late and expect us to remain open.

Sadly tomorrow is forecast very strong gale force winds and a brief thaw which means the tows will not be running. It is then predicted to get colder again with snow showers so the prospects are reasonable for the weekend but watch these emails or ring the answerphone before travelling.

Living North has written an article on WSC and the other Northern England ski clubs which is due to come out at the end of the week (January edition) - I havent seen a copy yet but hopefully it will give us some publicity and a good write up - why not go out and buy a copy.

Skiing Wednesday 7th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Several members attended today and skied until about 3pm and say that conditions were better than expected. There is good cover with plenty of snow although not a great base yet. There is the chance of more snow overnight but even without we are planning to open on Wednesday from 10am. Please note that due to it getting dark early we are unlikely to ski much beyond 3pm as we have to clear the fell before darkness falls! The road today was icy but not much snow. Obviously things may change overnight but it should be OK tomorrow with care.

Membership is now full but we do allow day members on weekdays and the reciprocal arrangement with Yad Moss is still in operation (1/2 price day fees) but you must bring along your membership cards.

Skiing Tuesday 6th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A decision has been made to open up for skiing tomorrow but there is no guarantee what the snow is like and at the moment no information on what road conditions are like. In other words be prepared for good/bad snow, good/bad weather and good/bad road conditions! Hope that helps!

Tows should be operating from 10am

Closing time will depend on conditions. Hopefully we will ski on Wednesday as well but I will update tomorrow night.

Snow update

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Well at last the snow has arrived and the season has begun. There has been a few inches on the fell tops today and a few intrepid kiteboarders went up to Swinhope and found more snow than expected and ran the lifts for an hour or two. The snow was wet and patchy and the base is not yet frozen so it was not safe to open for general use but the forecast is looking good with more snow predicted over the next couple of days and temperatures remaining low before a thaw in a week or so. Attached is a photo sent to me from today and condtions can also be viewed on the webcam but please note that the photo dated 6th December was actually taken on the 3rd before the snow. Subsequent photos have the correct date on but you will have to look at "previous photos" to see todays and probably tomorrow as well.
Because the cover is thin and wet and the base not hard enough yet we are not planning to open on Monday but there is a possibility that we may open later in the week and the answerphone will be updated when conditions improve sufficiently (01388 527527).

Helmets seem to be being used by more and more skiers and boarders and if you want to try a basic helmet that won't break the bank Decathlon are selling some for @ £20 - I cannot vouch for them but below is a link to their site. I believe Aldi also had some pretty cheap helmets in recently.
http://www.decathlon.co.uk/ad-i-jet-p-id_8155941.html

Finally I am pleased to say that membership is now 4 short of closing so by the end of this week we will be full for the year. Thanks to all those who have joined, both new members and longstanding members who have supported us for years. Lets hope you get great value for you membership fee this year. 2 days skiing and it has paid for itself. Remember however that the snow doesn't generally last long when it arrives so make the most of it when it does and get your kit prepared in advance. I have to repeat the age old reminder about snow chains or snow tyres if conditions require them and the need to pack a shovel and dig in at an angle to the fence and not to block any gates, especially the one by the car parking. I know many of you will have heard the same message for years but for those newer members it is very important for all our safety and enjoyment.

Happy skiing

WSC Newsletter

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi Everyone,

Winter is fast approaching and if you believe the weather predictions we are in for some snow next week. The good news is that at WSC we are ready for the snow - are you? The nature of snow skiing in England is such that when it arrives you have to grab it rather than wait until the next weekend when the likelyhood is it will have gone! So get your skis/boards ready, make sure you have your snow chains handy and can remember how to fit them, shovel in the back, make sure your boots still fit and most importantly keep your fingers crossed!

For those of you who need some more ski clothing/equipment the good news is that Nevisport in Newcastle have continued to support us and are offering members of WSC 20% discount off RRP on most products over the weekend 26/27th November. By using this discount weekend you are benefitting yourselves by saving significant amounts of hard earned cash, helping support WSC because Nevisport will only continue this discount offer if it is used and also benefitting one of our main supporters, Nevisport. But please remember to produce a valid wsc membership card to obtain the discount. There is a flyer attached to this email and a newsletter from Nevisport to all members. For those of you who receive this email that aren't members I apologise as this will be of no use to you - should have really joined shouldn't you!

For those wishing to join we have approximately 30 places left after which time we will close membership so do not delay any longer because once the first flakes arrive I guarantee those remaining places will go instantly.

If you want to get into the mood for skiing then no better way to do it than go and see the new Warren Miller film. Superb adventure skiing and boarding action from all over the world (may even include Weardale if you look hard enough through tinted glasses). The nearest showing is at the Rheged Centre, Penrith Thursday 24 Nov 7.30PM and tickets can be bought on line at www.warrenmiller.co.uk and I have atached a flyer to this email with more details. I am planning to go over next thursday.

If you want to get your legs into shape before the seson starts then Silksworth ski slope are offering special deals at the moment and attached to this email is a flyer from them about the discounts and recreational pass and also the Freestyle Demo night.

I have also received an email from the British Association of Ski Patrollers who offer First Aid training, Ski Rescue etc. Two of our members recently attended a course in the Lake District (I think) and say it was excellent and well worth it. Have a look at the BASP website www.basp.org.uk which also has more information on the benefits of becoming a member.

Finally how about avalanche training. Perhaps not an essential skill on the slopes at Weardale, though I have witnessed two small avalanches on Black Scar in the last couple of years. However for those of you who ski abroad, and especially if you ski backcountry, it could be a real life saver.  Below is an invitation to attend a one day course in Chamonix for a meagre £75 though I suspect that does not include travel! Who knows it could save your life.

Avalanche Academy is the first and only
specialist avalanche training organisation in the Chamonix region. We are
dedicated to making people safer in the off-piste and our Mountain Guides
are specialists in avalanche awareness.

Our courses are all just one day long and are only £75 per person. Private
Training is also available. Courses cater for all levels, and cover the
following as a minimum:
•        Information Finding.
•        Risk Evaluation on snow.
•        Route planning in hazardous conditions.
•        Safer skiing techniques on suspect slopes.
•        Snow profiling.
•        Rescue procedures including use of transceivers, shovels and
probes.

At Avalanche Academy we want to encourage people to get into the off-piste,
but we want to give them the required skills and judgement first.

Also worth a mention is that every Monday night at 7pm we will be hosting a
free Avalanche Awareness talk at La Terrasse in Chamonix town centre.
The talks will run from Mid December through until the end of March. Each
presentation will last around 30-40 minutes and will cover the basics of how
to avoid avalanches, and what to do if caught in one. Everyone is welcome to
attend - why not come along ?

For more information, or to book on-line, just visit
www.avalancheacademy.com .

Phew, that was a long email. See you on the slopes soon

All the machinery has been serviced, the hangars all fully serviced and replaced, the pistes prepared and now allwe can do is sit back and wait for the snow. If the Daily Mail is accurate then we are in for a cracking winter. The attached photo from the summit of Cairngorm was emailed to me last week and can be seen on facebook.

Membership is nearly full. We are currently up to 670 members so there are 80 places left after which membership will close.

Hope to see a few of you at the AGM

Goodbye Indian summer, Hello Alpine winter

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hope you have all enjoyed the fine end to our summer and if the Daily Mail is correct (aren't they always?) we are due some snow in October and a very cold winter with below average temperatures through to March. After last years phenomenally good start to the season it would be advisable to be prepared for snow and make the most of it when it arrives this season as you never know how long it will last.

Membership renewals have been sent out to all current members and so far we have 515 who have rejoined. We have now opened membership to new members and everybody on our waiting list has been sent a form. Anyone wishing to join can download a membership form from the website (www.skiweardale.com) but please note that our maximum number is 750 and I expect we will reach that by the end of this month when membership will close. From now membership applications will be dealt with on a first come first served basis until we reach 750. The membership secretary has been working flat out for the last 2 weeks and all renewals have been completed and the last ones will be in the post this weekend - anyone who has not received them by next weekend please let the membership secretary know.

Work parties this year have been very well attended which means we have got a huge amount of wok done. This includes grass and reed cutting, ditching, hangar servicing, fence repairs and new fencing, pylon painting, stone removal from the new M1 run, servicing and repairs to the Rolba, Pistebasher and Skidoo, cleaning out the ski lodge and many other jobs. Thanks to all who helped out and thanks to those who have offered to continue some work such as the work on the Polaris, the Rolba and Pistebasher, dodgy electrics etc. Some jobs require specific skills but others simply need plenty of people so all the family can join in as demonstrated by the Donnelly clan from Westgate who turned out in full last weekend! Thank you all.

Toilets. Most would agree that our toilet facilities in the ski lodge are basic and not the nicest of places to visit. We are making this one of our main objectives next year to replace the current toilets with a better facility and are looking into composting toilets (not literally!). If anyone has any expertise in this field that they would like to share with us we would be very grateful. In the meantime we are thinking of a Portaloo near the car park and if anyone has a spare Portaloo at home or knows of one going cheap then please let me know.

We are also on the lookout for any spare crash helmets which can be used on the quad or the skidoo so again if anyone has an old helmet that is surplus to requirements then please let me know.

I have been talking to Swiss Tim who has a great range of new and second hand skis available at fantastic savings. This is particularly helpful for those of you with children who seem to outgrow their boots and skis every season and he can replace these at a fraction of the cost of buying new kit. He currently has loads of second hand skis and boots and has some brand new Kneissl skis at half price. He can be contacted via his website, www.swisstimsskis.com or on his mobile 07957 592500

Here's hoping for another fantastic ski season.

Membership renewals

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Membership renewal forms have been sent out to all current members and you should be receiving them in the next day or so. Renewal is guaranteed for all who reurn the form by the end of September. From 1st October we will open to the general public for any remaining places and the new members form will be downloadable from the website (http://www.skiweardale.com/) from then. We have had to close to membership for the last 2 years and there has been huge interest this year so I expect that before the end of October we will again have to close membership so please do not delay if you are keen to join.

Please note that the membership secretary has "done a runner" and gone on holiday for 2 weeks so do not panic if there is a delay in her posting out membership cards.

Finally, for those few of you who have yet to attend a work party (ie about 750 of you) there are 2 more opportunities this month on Sunday 18th and 25th September - why not give it a try and give a hand for all or part of the day. It is surprising how much can get done with many hands.

New dates for September's work parties

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Due to conflicting commitments, local agricultural shows and holidays the dates for the work parties in September have had to be altered. The new dates will be Sunday 18th and Sunday 25th September both commencing at 10am. The planned work parties on the 11th + 14th have had to be cancelled. All are welcome and these will be the last 2 formal work parties of the summer so the last chance for those 750+ members who haven't managed to attend a work party to make amends!!!!

work party report

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A very successful work party was held yesterday with 22 people in attendance and was followed by a BBQ which approximately 1/2 stayed on for.
Jobs completed include
1, de-stoning the M1 piste which will hugely improve the run and make it safer to bodies and ski equipment!
2, painting and fibre glassing parts of the new Piste-basher
3, Repositioning some of the snow fencing at the bottom of the new "West  Run"
4, Repairs to the return bridge on the "Midi route"
5, Filling in some of the bogs on the access path with stones cleared from the M1
6, Servicing some of the hangars - these are being given a complete overhaul - the first in 35 years, to remove all the hardened oil etc and replace worn parts.
7, Planting of some saplings near the new garage
8, I am sure other work was also carried out that I was not aware of - sorry if I have missed anyone out!

Thanks to Chloe, Derek, James, Richard, Ivan, Hannah, Ian X 2, Philip, Hugh, Anne, Richard, Kimberley, Lyn, Conrad and the committee members - Mike, Shane, Terry, Simon, Judy, Kevin + myself - nice to see so many there.

There will be 3 more work parties in September - details will be emailed out nearer the time - provisionally these are Sunday 11th September, Wednesday 14th September and Sunday 25th September but may change as I am on holiday for the first 2!

Work party Saturday 13th August

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A quick reminder that next Saturday we will be having an additional work party at Swinhope followed by a BBQ. The work party will start at 10am as usual and we will have the BBQ late afternoon. We will provide the BBQ so all you need to do is bring your own food and drinks.
There are lots of jobs to be done for all levels of skills and abilities and please feel free to bring along friends or other family members. We will provide any tools that are needed so just bring along some old warm clothing (it can get cold up there even in August) and some sturdy shoes/boots/wellies.

If you intend to attend please can you reply to this to give me some idea of numbers.

WSC BBQ and work party 13th Aug

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi everybody and hope you are all having a great summer. Skiing is perhaps not your main priority at the moment but nevertheless work is ongoing preparing the slopes for next season. WSC renewal forms will be sent out to all current members towards the end of August and we will be accepting renewals from 1st September. All current members who renew by the end of September will be guaranteed a place and from the 1st October we will be opening up membership to everybody. As Alison, our membership secretary, has a significant waiting list we anticipate being oversubscribed again this year so would urge you to renew as soon as possible. From the 1st October applications will be procesed on a first come, first served basis so existing members should ensure that they renew by 31st September to guarantee a place - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED AND THE MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY WILL ADHERE TO THE RULE THIS YEAR - no more sob stories accepted!!

Breaking with tradition, in an attempt to encourage more at work parties, we are planning to hold a work party followed by a BBQ on Saturday 13th August. We will provide the BBQ but you will need to bring your own food for it. If the weather is good there is also the option of camping out overnight and making a weekend of it. Children are welcome but must at all times be the responsibility of their parents or guardians - this important given the terrain and machinery used. There will be child friendly jobs like stone picking from the M1 (whoever said child labour was immoral!). I will email more details nearer the day and would be grateful for some idea of numbers so if anyone is interested then please reply to me.

HELP NEEDED.
1, The Polaris, our newest Skidoo, has broken down and needs some work on it. The clutch has been playing up and was catching early but recently cut out completely and won't now start. If anyone has the time and knowledge and is prepared to have a look at it then please contact me or Mike Leatherland.
2, The new PisteBasher needs some work on the attachments. The spreader bar could do with some fibreglassing and painting and the tiller needs derusting and painting. Again if anyone has the skill, time and willingness to help then please contact either myself or Mike.

Hope you all have a fantastic summer

work party reminder - Sunday

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Sunday 19th June - Father's Day - what better way to spend it than a good workout helping out at a work party. Ladies, if you haven't bought him a present yet, print out this email, wrap it up and rename it "adventure day package", pack him a lunch and you can have the day to yourselves! Similar adventure days normally retail at £110 from Redletterdays.co.uk but for this summer only they are free.

There is loads of work to be done and so far attendance can only be described as pathetic. Our first 2 parties have attracted a grand total of 10 people in all and only 2 of those were non committee members - thanks to Ivan and Martin who put in a good days work. That means this sunday we should have the remaining 790 members? Seriously though if you do want the equipment to run without breaking down, you want the snow fences vertical and doing their job, the slopes cleared of rocks, the lodge clean, the access route not boggy etc then we need you to turn out and help - its no use complaining when the snow comes that something is not working or that you have scratched your new carvers on a stone. We have a very small number of very dedicated people who literally spend weeks up there every year, in their own time, unpaid, unrecognised mostly and struggling to keep the club going but there is only so much that a few people can do.

If for some reason you cannot make Sunday then we will have 3 further work parties in September. All the work parties start at 10am from the car park.

Work party reminder Wednesday 8th June

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Our second work party of the summer is tomorrow, Wednesday 8th June starting at 10am. All are welcome and there will be jobs for all levels of skill, strength and intellect!
Our first work party was rather poorly attended with only 6 of us there, 5 being committee members, but despite lack of quantity there was no lack of quality and a lot of good work was done with repairs to the Rolba track, brickwork on the new garage and some seeding being done. Thanks to Will, Martin, Simon, Mike and Shane for attending.
Wednesday will be more of the same as well as some work improving the new M1 piste (weather permitting) and moving some of the new snow fencing.
Please let me know if you plan to attend so I can let the field officers have an idea of numbers.

Below is a copy of an email from WSC member Roman Ivanec looking for others to accompany him on a trip to the USA next year - looks good fun so if anyone is interested please contact him directly

Steve

I am proposing to get a small party (2or 3)together for a 30 day trip to the USA next January. The proposal would be to fly to Colorado and then ski as much as possible there before going to Utah and Nevada .I have costed it roughly by hiring a car staying outside of the big resorts and driving to them each day. Many of the resorts in Colorado can be visited on 1 lift pass which costs about £430.In total with flights and accommodation car hire lift passes and subsistence I think it will cost@£4000. Can you advertise the proposal with club members to see if anyone is interested?

work parties

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Yes it is that time of the year again. Summer is the time when we have to sort out the slopes for the following superb winter season! For  new members who have never attended  these work parties are a voluntary way to put something back into the club and are a great way of getting to know your fellow skiers and boarders and are also good fun. They also offer an opportunity to see the skiing area without a cover of snow which can be quite useful when you are skiing off the pisted routes in winter. You may not realise how much work goes on just to keep the club running and to make the skiing as safe and enjoyable as possible and a lot of the work is done by a small regular band of very hard working committee members and a few others. The work parties are a great way for you to help and no specific skills are needed. So far we have provisional dates for work parties starting this Sunday 5th June, Wednesday 8th June and Sunday 19th June. We also plan 3 dates in September - provisionally Sunday 11th September, Wednesday 14th September and Sunday 25th September.
We meet at the car park at 10am but feel free to turn up at any time if you cannot make the start. Please bring warm clothing and food and drink as it can get cold there even in summer. Clothing should be appropriate for the fells ie old clothes with wellies or work/walking boots. We will supply all the necessary equipment (paint brushes, goggles, gloves etc) but if you have your own favourites then feel free to bring them along.
Jobs needing to be undertaken range from clearing the stones off the new M1 route, moving and repairing snow fencing, painting, wood preservation, laying of grass seed on the new run and possibly bricklaying at the base of our new garage.
We welcome people of any age or ability and hopefully you will enjoy the day. To make it easier for the organisers can you please reply to me if you intend coming to give us some idea of numbers.
Please remember that this is your ski club and this is your chance to put something back. Please also remember to sign the register when you do attend - this is particularly helpful to identify prospective members who will be given priority application if they have attended work parties.

I will confirm later work party dates nearer the time which will also hopefully act as a prompt!!

Fwd: New PisteBasher

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Still no sign of significant snow I am afraid. We have had episodic thin covering but not enough to ski on and we seem to be following Europe's poor season this year despite the excellent start we got.
The good news is that we have been successful with a grant application to fund a "new" Pistebasher and a garage to house it in along with improving car parking facilities. The grant came from the North Pennines Leader Fund and also the Weardale Area Action Partnership and has approximately paid half the total costs. We already have the Pistebasher which is vastly more powerful than our old one and all we need now is some snow to use it on! The logic behind upgrading this machine is so that when we do get snow we can use it to better effect by compacting it, utilising snow collected by the snow fencing and also make the slopes easier for beginners. Compacted snow also lasts longer and hopefully will prolong the skiing.
The car parking improvements have already been completed which has created spaces for approximately 20 more cars just beyond the existing car park on the right side of the road.
The new garage is currently being built and hopefully will be ready by the end of the month and there may well be some disruption to access if we do get any snow in the meantime.

Below is an offer from "Take a Hike", Weardale's outdoor shop in Stanhope, which now offers online orders via its website. Members can get a 10% discount using the code below.

silksworth promotion

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hi everyone, hope you are making the most of the mild weather! Just in case you are losing your "ski legs" below is a promotion for WSC members to use the dry ski slope facilities at Siksworth in Sunderland.

I also have an apology to make to half of you who did not get the snow alert last weekend due to a "techincal error" - in other words a cock up by me! We did open last Sunday when we had 2inches or so of snow but it was rather wet and disappointing. We only opened F1 because F2 was iced up and a lot of the snow had blown off and we closed shortly after lunch. About 25 people turned up and put on brave faces. Those who didn't receive the snow alert were the lucky ones! At least we tested out the new car parking spaces above the fell entrance which proved very effective.

The only other news is that our new garage is being built to house our new Pistebasher and will hopefully be completed in the next month or so. Progress is well underway. In the event of us opening for skiing in the next few weeks please be aware of the building works and the cordoned off areas.

WSC update

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Whilst waiting for the snow to return I thought I would give you a quick update. After a fantastic start to the season in November it has gone fairly quiet although we did get a weekend skiing in early January though it proved rather difficult to get to the slopes on the Saturday with sheet ice covering the road making it difficult even for 4WD. A bit of fresh snow overnight made it a lot easier the next day and a great day was had by many with both tows running all day uninterupted by breakdowns! You will be pleased to hear the electrical fault has been traced and sorted out. Since then however we hae only had a thin covering which has been insufficient to ski on but February is meant to be significantly cold.

Whilst you are waiting for the snow to return WSC members have been offered some excellent special deals at Silksworth Dry Ski Club which covers ski and board servicing as well as reduced membership etc. Details below but remember you will need to show your WSC membership card. Please also remember to use it at the many outdoor shops including Nevisport, LD and Take a Hike who offer a 10% discount all year as well as their special offers.

The club newsletter is soon to be produced which has some exciting news about WSC but I won't spoil the surprise here!

Skiing this weekend

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

The snow has returned at long last and has fallen on top of a hard base. We have had several cms of fresh snow today and more is predicted overnight. We are planning to ski this weekend and tow(s) should open from 10am tomorrow (Saturday 8th Jan). Currently only F1 is working as we have an electrical fault on F2. We hope that this will be fixed tomorrow but there is no guarantee so come prepared to ski F1 only. We will update the answerphone on Saturday night reporting on conditions and whether F2 is operating. Please note that we are open STRICTLY TO MEMBERS ONLY at weekends.

The road is very icy with currently a thin covering of snow on and is likely to be very tricky tomorrow so 4WD or Chains will be ESSENTIAL. Please put chains on at the layby before turning up towards the slopes and don't obstruct the road either at the bottom or when parking in the car park.

"Sadly" I am being taken away to Les Arcs tomorrow so will miss all the fun and will be unable to send out further emails until I return.

Happy skiing.

Steve
