Snow report Tuesday 28th Jan

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Sadly the predicted snow overnight turned out to be rain as it was milder than expected. This meant we were unable to open today and will not open until we get some fresh snowfall. An inspection of the fell yesterday showed a thin covering of snow over some icy patches and a few bare areas making it not suitable for skiing. F2 was rather more bare than F1.

There is no imminent snow forecast so I will update this email once the white stuff promises to return.

Happy New Year to everyone

Possible skiing Tuesday 28th January

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Hope you all had a lovely christmas and didn't overindulge too much!

There is a possibility of skiing tomorrow but it depends on whether or not we get the predicted overnight snow. We have had 1 or 2 cm this morning but the webcam picture still doesnt look great. The answerphone (01388 527527) will be updated in the morning to say whether we are opening. It is likely that only F1 will be running if we do open as F2 has an electrical fault which we will endeavour to repair but cannot guarantee. If we do open we will also be open to day members tomorrow - please download the application form from the website and take it with you.

Skiing is on for Thursday 23rd December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Once again I spoke too soon, I should really learn my lesson! We have had several cms of fresh snow in Weardale today and it is still falling so we are planning to open up tomorrow (Thursday 23rd December). We have not had a fell inspection but hopefully the fresh snow will have covered over any bare patches and there was already a good solid base down. We are planning to open the runs from 10:30am and we will welcome day members. Please can day members download the "day membership form" from the website and bring it along with the day fee. Please hand this to a tow operator BEFORE skiing. I am not sure what the road will be like tomorrow but suggest chains for non 4WD cars will be necessary.

Apologies for sending this out so late but I have just returned from a day away and was not expecting this snow. Happy skiing.

snow update

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Sadly the snow keeps falling in all the wrong places. They have had it in Scotland, on the East Coast, in the Midlands, Ireland, Wales and for heavens sake even in London! Unfortunately the Pennines seems to have missed out. We still have snow on Swinhope but it is patchy with some ice and potentially dangerous skiing conditions so have been unable to open but we all have fiingers crossed for bit more fresh snow - it won't take a lot to make it skiable again. Still we have had the best skiing in the early season for many years. According to WSC life member John Stevenson it is the best snow we have had in November since 1964 which is the year they first skied at Swinhope and when the club was formed from its origins on Observatory Hill in Durham in 1957. Membership then was 30 shillings for an adult and 2 Guineas for a family and we had 45 members. We now have 780 members and I suspect the membership fee is now cheaper than in 1964 taking into account inflation.

Enough of the history. It doesnt look like we will be skiing before the 25th so I will take this opportunity on behalf of WSC to wish you all the very best for Christmas and the New Year. Lets hope for a prosperous and snowy New Year.

I hope many of you made use of the 20% discount weekends at Nevisport, Take a Hike and LD Mountain centre. I certainly did and saved myself a fortune (how many times have you men heard that excuse in the sales?). Don't forget that they all offer 10% discount all year round on production of that valuable WSC card.

Finally a brief mention of the other ski clubs in the North. In Teesdale we have Yad Moss and Harwood both of whom take day members when open. We have a reciprocal arrangement with Yad Moss whereby our members can ski there and their members can ski with us at a reduced rate on production of a valid card. Our weekend restrictions on not accepting day members does not affect this agreement and neither does Yad Moss's new day membership system affect WSC members wishing to ski there. Sadly neither of them at the moment have enough snow to ski on like us and neither does Allenheads Ski Club. Over in the Lake District there is a ski club on Raise which sometimes can hold the snow longer but currently is closed as well. LD Ski club does not accept day members but you can join on the slope once you have got your breath back from the long walk up! It is my ambition this season to ski all 5 of the "Northern Resorts" and I will report back on my success (or lack of) at the end of the season.

LD Mountain centre discount weekend (11th + 12th December)

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

As you won't be skiing this weekend why not call in at LD Mountain centre in Newcastle who are offering WSC members 20% discount all weekend upon production of a valid WSC membership card. You can pretend you are accompanying your wife/husband doing the christmas shopping and spend it all on ski equipment + clothing thereby getting brownie points and some discounted kit!!

snow go

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Spoke too soon didn't I? The strong winds, warmer weather and rain has dealt a blow to any hopes of skiing tomorrow. An inspection of the slopes today showed slush and bare patches which unfortunately means that skiing is off for Saturday. It is forecast to get colder on Saturday night and if it freezes then skiing may be possible on Sunday but there will not be full cover. The long range forecast is for it to get much colder next week with snow showers starting midweek.

Yad Moss is also closed this weekend.

snow report Thursday 9th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

There was no skiing today and we are not planning to open on Friday due to essential maintenance and also restocking fuel etc in anticipation of the weekend. The forecast is for it to get milder tomorrow and Saturday but then on Sunday the temperatures are set to fall again and perhaps a hint of more snow next week. At this stage we are planning to open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am both days but please check the answerphone before travelling. I will update this email message on Saturday evening.

Only one car in the ditch yesterday so you are getting better!!!

snow report Wednesday 8th Dec

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Another glorious day in the Weardale Alps today with great snow and wall to wall sunshine (at least thats what it looked like to me doing Christmas shopping in the Metro Centre - can't win them all!).
At the moment it looks like we are not opening tomorrow but if things change we will update the answerphone in the morning (01388 527527). We may open on Friday - again check the answerphone before making any plans. The forecast for the weekend does look good for both days so fingers crossed it doesnt change.

Snow Report Tuesday 7th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

For once it is all positives to write about. We had great snow today with 2 inches of fresh powder topping up the already firm base and the whole area is open. We had about 90 people today who enjoyed some glorious weather. Both lifts ran without a single interuption until Ian Mac commented that they hadn't stopped all day, so promptly both lifts tripped! The reason for tripping is when people let go of the buttons too late and there is not enough time for it to recoil and it trips the hill circuit. Please do not overrun the mounds of snow which mark the top of the lifts.

The road is still white with a few rutted areas but can be negotiated with 4WD or 2WD with chains. Do not attempt with 2WD and no chains as you are likely to get stuck. However it is nice to report no incidents on the road today. The parking was good, the ditches didn't see any cars close up and the farmer got on with his farming!

We are planning to open tomorrow (Wednesday) from 10am. Day members should download the application form from the website and present it with the day fee before skiing. Members should display their membership cards please to make life easier for the tow operators.

The lost house keys have also been re-united with their owner.

Snow report from Sunday 5th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A superb day was appreciated by about 120 people today. Sun greeted us in the morning and the snow was crisp and nicely groomed. As far as I am aware there were no major incidents on the road, the parking was pretty good apart from one car that got "ditched" at the very top and was left blocking the road - not sure what happened about that but it looks like he(or she) drove a little bit too close to the side and the front wheel dropped into the shallow ditch which is very easily done. The car was a red Fiat, X445BBR - please let me know what happened as it was completely obstructing the road. Please take extreme care when pulling over to one side, even if it means stopping your car, getting out and physically checking what the ground is like. There was one white van registration W942PHY which was partially blocking the emergency gate at the top of the car park - please try and leave this area accessible to all vehicles as the farmer, mountain rescue or 4WD ambulance may need to use it.

This week we are hoping to open on Tuesday and Wednesday (weather permitting) and plan to open at 10am both days. Please check the answerphone (01388 527527) before travelling to check we are open and for details of road conditions. Road conditions have improved but more snow is forecast tonight and it is also freezing so 4WD or Chains are likely to be necessary this week still.

I have a set of house keys that were found in the layby at the bottom of the road. If anyone has lost theirs then please let me know. A member has also lost a white (of all colours to lose in snow) mobile phone - if found please let me know again.

Snow Report Saturday 4th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Oh dear it seems that not much christmas shopping is getting done this year and if the snow continues like it is then there may be a few disappointed faces on the 25th December. About 100 or so members shunned the crowds at the Metro Centre and enjoyed an excellent days skiing today. The weather was good and the snow excellent and the tows ran with only occasional interuptions. We are planning to open again tomorrow (Sunday) from 10am - again it will be members only and non members will be turned away.

Please note that we tend to close the lifts soon after 3pm as the light goes pretty quickly after that. The road is still tricky with yet more 4X4 vehicles in ditches today and is likely to be the same tomorrow. 4WD cars if fitted with decent tyres or chains should be ok and 2WD with chains may be ok with care. James has sent a photo of the road (http://tinyurl.com/33rs3c7) for you to see for yourselves what the road is like. Please can I reiterate that if you do use chains these should be put on in the layby at the bottom before turning up the road to the slopes. Most chains need to be retensioned after a few hundred yards. If you are new to chains can I suggest trying them out at home rather than trying them on the road up to the slopes for the first time as seemed to happen today! Please also watch out for the ditches at the roadside. The road is very narrow and most ditch incidents tend to occur when a (usually) 4WD car pulls over to let someone coming the other way past. When in a ditch 4WD is not much help and they are not always easy to see! There are a few passing places and generally speaking the car coming dowhill should give way to the upcoming car.

On a happy note the car parking appeared good today, the queues ran smoothly and the skiing was great. The new route (M1) was a lot better today but there are still a few stones exposed at the bottom so be careful especially if you have decent skis/boards. The new route to the west has been pisted (bottom half only) and is a great new addition to our other routes.

I have a set of house keys that were found in the layby at the bottom of the the road today. If anyone has lost some please contact me.

Skiing report for the weekend 4/5th December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

More good news and a little bad news to report again - the story of my life!

The good news is that the road was opened up today and allowed about 60 people to enjoy some excellent snow. The main runs have been pisted and all is looking good. We are planning to open tomorrow and Sunday from 10am. We will only be allowing members this weekend - non members will be turned away. Please display your membership card as we will be running several checks throughout the day

The bad news is that the road is still treacherous with several cars, including 4X4s in ditches today. The road is very narrow and there are few passing places and in many places there is an accompanying ditch (which I found out to my cost on Wednesday). Please take care when driving and be extremely careful if pulling to one side to pass. Tomorrow I would suggest 4WD is preferable and even then with care. Only attempt in a 2WD with chains if you are a competent driver in snow. Most importantly put your chains on before turning up the hill. There is a layby a few hundred meters before the turn and this must be used to put chains on. Today people were obstructing the road to put chains on much to the annoyance of local traffic and others were reversing down the steep hill causing bedlam. Please be considerate to other skiers and local inhabitants.

Another worry today was a snowboarder who was pulling way out to the side of the towline despite being warned not to. This is potentially very dangerous as there is a risk of pulling the rope off the pulleys. As a boarder myself I know the tows can be difficult at times but try your hardest to stay in line. Persistent offenders unfortunately will be banned as we cannot take any risks.

Sorry to end on a negative note but a small number of people can ruin a day for everyone else so please think of others. Remember we are a small club run by a very small number of volunteers who put in 100's of hours to try and keep the place open. Don't make life any harder for us please.

Happy skiing

Steve

Skiing Friday 3rd December

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Further heavy snowfall and drifts meant that nobody could get up to the slopes today as the road was completely blocked. Hopefully tomorrow will be more successfull. We are planning to open up at about 10am tomorrow but there may well be delays. Even if the road is ploughed it will be difficult and 4WD will be necessary or chains with a 2WD (if there is enough ground clearance). Please do not turn up too early as we will have to clear the parking, piste the route across which is covered in deep snow and various other jobs.

We are accepting day members tomorrow (Friday 3rd) and it would be very helpful if you would download and print off a day membership form from the website (www.skiweardale.com) and bring it along already completed with the correct day fee. We will be opening also on Saturday and Sunday from 10am (will update the answerphone if anything changes) but this will be for members only. Non members will sadly be turned away at the weekend.
We will be running regular checks on membership so it would be helpful if you can display membership cards visibly.

Please drive carefully and respect the local population and do not block the fell gate in the carpark - anyone doing so will be towed away - you have been warned!

snow update Tuesday 30th November

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Good news and bad news. Good news is that there is now loads and loads of snow on F2 which has been a bit bare these last few days and the weather is due to stay cold long into the weekend with falling winds and better conditions. The bad news is that we have another electrical problem with F1 which fortunately occured at the end of todays skiing but means that we are not sure if we will be able to get the lifts operating tomorrow. As the forecast is for heavy snow and strong winds we have decided not to open tomorrow and I will let everyone know whether we get the problems sorted out. It is looking good for the weekend though!

Today 40 or 50 people enjoyed our 4th day of the season and the conditions have improved a lot. The road however has remained difficult and the strong winds and drifting snow have not helped but hopefully again this will improve by the weekend.

Don't forget this weekend "Take a Hike", the outdoor shop in Stanhope, is offereing WSC members an excellent 20% discount on goods on production of a valid membership card - why not call in on your way up and see what they have to offer?

Steve

Monday, 29 November 2010

snow report Monday 29th November

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Further fresh snow improved conditions today and approximately 40 people enjoyed our 3rd day of the season so far. There has been heavy snow tonight but also strong winds are forecast tomorrow so a decision whether to open or not will be made in the morning. The answerphone will be updated before 9am tomorrow. If not tomorrow, hopefully we will be opening on Wednesday. Please note that the road is tricky and 4WD or chains are currently essential (or sometimes both). Don't forget the shovel either.

We have had a few incidents recently on the roads involving local residents. In one incident somebody was involved in a minor accident with the house at the very bottom of the road to the slopes at the foot of the very steep bank. In another incident a female resident was driven off the road by a skier not taking enough care and ended up in a ditch and the local farmer's wife was nearly driven off the road on Sunday by a silver estate. Fortunately nobody has been injured in any of these but please can I ask everyone to drive with the utmost care and respect the local population who travel these roads daily.

snow report Sunday 28th November

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Well what a great start to the season with 2 days so far in November and more snow and cold weather forecast. The reason for this cold weather I am told is that the gulf stream is way down south at the moment - long may it stay in there!
Today we had 100 or so members enjoying some excellent weather and reasonable cover of snow on the lower slopes. There was little extra snow overnight, it all seems to be falling near the east coast and Northumberland, but the whole of the F1 area was skiable and surprisingly good. Cover was thin and without more snow probably not good enough to open tomorrow but as we left it started snowing heavily so the omens are good and we plan to open tomorrow (Monday) at 10am but please check the answerphone before travelling in case things change. 4WD or Chains will be needed. We will be accepting day members through the week but please approach a tow operator before skiing to pay the day fee, and members please show your tickets.

Parking is tight when we are busy and I am pleased to comment on how good the parking was today apart from one irresponsible person who blocked the emergency gate (despite a big notice on it). Fortunately they were found and moved it before the local farmer came and towed the car away. The gate is the only access for the the local farmer and more importantly for the emergency services should anyone need evacuating from the slopes - remember it could be you! At busy times (usually weekends) please try and car share if possible - WSC features on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=49959985138) and people often use this for sharing lifts and a member has started a new thread on snowheads.com for car sharing etc (http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=69673).

F2 cover was thin today and the new route (nicknamed the M1) is quite rocky so we have closed it off until we either get enough snow cover or a chance to remove some of the rocks and level it out a bit. With a bit more snow the rest of the F2 area will be skiable.

Steve

Skiing Sunday 28th November

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Reasonably heavy overnight snow meant that we could open for our first day skiing today and about 40 people duly turned up to Swinhope and enjoyed good snow and excellent weather. The snow was rather "sticky" initially (unless that is because I hadn't waxed my skis) but got better as the day progressed. We only ran F1 today as the snow was thinner at the top but if the forecast overnight snow arrives tonight then hopefully we will get both lifts open tomorrow. The road conditions were a bit tricky today and if it freezes overnight might be difficult in the morning. 4WD or chains will be needed and remember to put a shovel in your boot. We are planning to open from 10am but please check the answerphone for further updates before travelling - 01388 527527.

Please note that tomorrow is for members only so please bring along your cards and show them to a tow operator before skiing.

We hope to open for skiing some days next week if weather permits and on these days we will open to day members. I will try and give advance notice of when we are going to open but the answerphone will be kept up to date as conditions can change quite quickly.

Finally thanks to Michael Chilcott who came to the rescue when my alarm wouldn't switch off nor my car start. It could have been a long cold walk down to Westgate. Thanks Michael, I owe you one.

snow report

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

The snow has fallen mainly along the east coast today but later this afternoon we had 2 or 3 inches in Stanhope raising the possibility of skiing tomorrow (Friday) and the weekend. I won't be able to update the emails for a couple of days so please watch the weather forecasts and if it looks good ring the answerphone (01388 527527). Don't forget you can view the webcam which is updated at @ 9am every morning on http://www.skiweardale.com/

If you do travel up this weekend please remember always to pack a shovel and park responsibly leaving enough room for others. 4WD or Chains may be necessary so check the answerphone before travelling. The weather conditions can change very quickly so any information on the answerphone is only for guidance and I suggest you always err on the cautious side. Chains nowadays are pretty cheap and can make all the difference, even for some 4WD cars.

Happy skiing

snow report

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Welcome back to the first snow report of the new season. You cannot have missed the headline news stories about the forecast snow which indeed is falling lightly in Weardale as I write this report. Currently there is not enough snow to open but it is forecast to continue snowing for several more days making the prospect of opening in the next few days very real. Sadly I am away this weekend so after tomorrow night I will (probably) not be able to update this report so suggest keep a close watch on the weather reports and if it looks promising then ring the Weardale Ski Club Answerphone 01388 527527. In fact it is always a good idea to ring the answerphone before travelling as conditions can change quickly, and please pay attention to any information given about road conditions, parking etc.

At our recent Board meeting we formally agreed to return to the policy of opening up to Day Members only on weekdays when we are open and leaving weekends only for WSC members. We have taken this decision to ensure that members are not disadvantaged at the busy times, especially in view of the limited parking, but feel that we can accept day members during the quieter weekdays. Please note that the cost for Day Members is £20 for adults (aged over 18), £10 for intermediates (aged over 10), and £5 for juniors (Under 10). If possible can Day Members download the Day Membership form from the website (www.skiweardale.com), complete the details and present it to a Tow Operator BEFORE skiing with the correct payment. These forms can be downloaded at any time (hopefully will be on the site in the next day or 2) and kept at home in anticipation.

Discount weekends  - We have 2 Superb discount weekends coming up. Nevisport (Newcastle) are holding a 20% discount weekend on 27/28th November and are offering WSC members 20% off most full price items on production of a valid WSC membership card. If you cannot make it to the shop but are interested then if you contact the shop directly and preselect your items then they will endeavour to honour the discount as long as it is before the end of the weekend. Take a Hike - is a fairly new outdoor shop on Stanhope , Front Street which most of you will pass on route to the slopes. They are also offering a 20% discount on all full priced goods on the weekend 4/5th December again on production of a valid WSC card. Arnie who runs the shop is keen to provide any items that there is a demand for so please pay him a visit and if he doesnt have what you want tell him and he may be able to add it to his stock.
Please try and support both these businesses who themselves have been very supportive of Weardale Ski Club and whilst you are visiting Take a Hike why not pop across the road to Weardale Travel and book your ski holiday with one of their superb offers.

Wanted a pair of size 12 ski boots are wanted by a member so if anybody has any of these monsters lying around and are interested in selling them then please contact me and I will forward to the person seeking them.

The last work party of the season took place last weekend with a good turnout and all the final jobs have been completed so the slopes are looking great and just waiting for that snow to start falling. The work parties have been very well attended this year - thanks to everyone who has helped out. This has meant a huge amount of work has been completed and you will notice several improvements including extensive new snow fencing which should help retain the snow and also 2 new runs. One of these new runs has created a much easier route down from the top of F2 which will make the upper slopes more accessible to all levels of skier and boarder. The other run is the route out west from the top of F2 which was used last year but has never been properly pisted or marked out. The route is now much more obvious with long sections of snow fencing and will hopefully improve further with regular pisting.

Membership renewals have been flying in and we have now reached our upper limit so for the second year running we have had to close membership. It is always a pity to have to turn people away but if we get too many people parking becomes an issue and also lift queues can build up. We are looking at improving parking facilities but it doesn't look like that will be done in time for this season.

Finally don't forget the AGM to be held on Monday 15 November at the Honest Lawyer, Croxdale, Durham starting at 8pm

Sundays work party + Rolba fixed

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

The good news is that the Rolba has been fixed early and will be ready for use on Sunday 24 October. This means we can start the work party at the usual time of 10am not the later time I suggested earlier. The weather forecast is for occasional light showers but a cold northerly wind so wrap up well!

WSC AGM, Membership and Work Party.

The Weardale Ski Club ltd

The Weardale Ski Club AGM is being held at the Honest Lawyer Hotel, Croxdale, Durham DH1 3SP on Monday 15 November 2010 starting at 8pm. Everyone is welcome to come and join us and see what goes on behind the scenes. Any member interested in getting more involved in the running of WSC who would like to apply to join the board should express an interest 2 weeks before the meeting. We have several enthusiastic members who have been very helpful at work parties and if any of you are interested in joining us please will you contact me by the end of October at the latest or if you simply wish to discuss what it entails then feel free to contact me.

Membership
- we have currently over 600 members (new + renewals) and each day a few more applications drop onto our doormat. It is looking as though we will reach our maximum number in the next few weeks and have to close membership for the 2nd year running. If you have not renewed/joined yet I would suggest you do so pretty quickly or be disappointed. I have it on good authority that this winter will be even colder than last year ( Several people have emailed me to say that the Siberian Swans have arrived 3 weeks earlier than usual which signals the start of an arctic winter .........).

Work Party The (hopefully) final work party of the season will take place this Sunday 24 October. We need about 6-8 people to complete the final jobs - widening a bridge, a few new sections of snow fencing on a new run we have just had created and a few bits of tidying up. Unfortunately before we can do this we need to get the track back on the Rolba following repairs to it so please do not attend before 11am otherwise you will be standing around getting cold! Please email me if you intend to attend as we don't need a huge turnout and most of the work will be fairly heavy

Let hope the Siberian swans are true to form and we have a great season.

Re: Work Party report

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Yet another very successful work party was held with a large turnout of over 30 people. Fortunately the Rolba (our summer tracked vehicle) was repaired in time thanks to Rod and others which meant materials could be transported to + fro for all the jobs. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and a great deal of work was done including widening 2 bridges, finishing off the new ski fencing (just wait till you see the new run) and many other jobs.

Thanks to the board members who turned up and to Lance, Callum, Amy, Richard X 2, Wendy, Shaun, Paul, Ali, Phil, John, Chris,Derek, Graeme, Rob, Davis, Cameron, Denis, Liam, George, Heide, Nev, Kate (All 3 I believe wanting to join - print off the new membership form on the website from 1st October and write on the date of the work party attended), Colin, Scott, Roman, Sean & Rod.

We will need one more work party to finish off a few jobs and then should be all set for the new season - lets just hope it is half as good as last season.

For all membership queries can people please contact the membership secretary and not me - ajlumb@hotmail.co.uk For new members there wil be a downloadable form on the www.skiweardale.com website from the 1st October. Don't forget if you have moved address Alison needs your new details otherwise you wont get a renewal form!

Finally if anyone knows of somebody who is qualified to inspect our tow cables and would be happy to do so then please can you contact me. As far as we know they are in excellent condition but do need periodic inspection.

Work party sunday 26th September 10am

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Another great work party today with at least 25 people turning out, perhaps more as some never got to the clubhouse and I may not have got your names. If you are not mentioned below please email me and I will add you to our records. A lot of work was done today including a large amount of snow fencing, some ditching, some pylon painting, electrics checked on the lifts and telephone system repaired, the ticket office (aka chicken hut) was moved to a more suitable place and painted and fencing erected to direct people to it. We also had the grass cut on all the runs so that they look good enough to ski on already! Thank you to all who helped -Sue, Colin, James X 2, Martin, Richard X 2,Peter, Paul, Ivan, Lyn, Ann, Rod, Chuck, Steve X 2, Mike, Shane, Wayne and those whose names I never got.

The only downside of today was that the Rolba broke down. Hopefully it will be fixed for the work party on sunday 26th September 10am start (thanks in anticipation Rod). If it is fixed then the work party will proceed fullspeed as we have a lot to do and lots of hands needed. If it is not fixed the work party will still proceed but as our main workhorse would not be available then the opportunities may be limited and we may not need as many. I will try and send out an email to all who are planning to come on Saturday with more information but can all those who are planning to come on Sunday email me so I have a list and can contact you directly when we know the situation.

Finally we have again been offered free VIP tickets to the Telegraph Ski + Board show at the NEC in Birmingham on 29-31st Oct. This offer is only to WSC members. Last year several members went and gave glowing reports so if anyone takes up the offer (details below) please feedback to me and I will pass on your comments to others.

Reminder about work party

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Just a reminder to everyone that our last 2 work parties are being held this week on Wednesday 22nd September and Sunday 26th September both commencing at 10 am from the car park. All welcome whether for the whole day or part of it and there is lots of work for everyone from very basic to skilled. You need only bring along enthusiasm and a sense of humour - no other tools needed but I would suggest old warm clothes and good footwear!

Lets see if we can get the slopes prepared for yet another fantastic season skiing + boarding!

Re: Work Party report

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A very successful work party was held last sunday with about 20 volunteers attending on a very pleasant day and a lot of work was carried out. One of the first improvements you may notice is drainage of the route across to the botom of F1 which gets very boggy and will hopefully be less so now after several drains have been dug in and backfilled with hardcore and gravel. We managed to get some equipment serviced and up and running again including the generator thanks to Kevin and Richard who travelled up from Huddersfield to help out again. Thanks also to Ian, Chris, Jeff, Kate, Harriet, Neal, Jack, Gavin, Derek, Scott and George as well as fellow board members who turned out (If I missed anyone out - you didnt sign the book so let me know). Other work carried out included timber treatment of the hut at the top of F2 by Harriet and Kate who seemed to get more on themselves than the hut! We also managed to widen one of the bridges which will be essential if we proceed with our hoped for "new" pistebasher and also put up some new snowfencing, built some shelves in the garage for storage etc. Thank you to all who helped.

The next work party is on Wednesday 22nd September and then Sunday 26th September (not 16th as in one of my emails) - both starting at 10am. We have more bridges to widen so need plenty of muscle.

Finally, membership renewals are coming in thick and fast and from 1st October any remaining places will be opened up to all-comers. Please pay attention to the small box at the bottom of the form - only tick it if you do not wish to receive information about special offers etc. We will never give out our database to other companies but do on occasions give address labels to Nevisport or LDMountain so that they can send out details of their discount dates for WSC members. If you have ticked this box then we will not hand out your details but that means you may not hear about any discount dates or special offers although I will try and include them in my emails.

Re: Reminder about work party

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

The first of the September work parties takes place this Sunday 5th starting at 10am. All are welcome to attend for the day or part of the day and there is plenty of work to be done.

Membership renewals have been sent out this weekend to all current members so they should be arriving in the next day or so. Please note that we are guaranteeing renewal to current members if they renew before 1st October after which time we are opening to all applications. From 1st October we will operate a first come first served policy until we are full. We will give those who have attended work parties preferential treatment in the event of us closing applications.

The dates for the following work parties are as follows Wednesday 22nd + Sunday 16th September both commencing at 10am.

work party dates September

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

As promised here are the dates for the next 3 work parties. 5th + 26th September (Sundays) and 22nd September (Wednesday) all starting at 10am.

We still have plenty of work to do so the more people that attend the better. No specific skills required apart from enthusiasm! Bring packed lunch and warm clothes as it can get cold up there in September even when it is warm lower down!

Hopefully see some of you at the next work party

Steve

ps thanks to those of you who have written in support of our proposed plans to buy a "new" Pistebasher, build a new garage and improve the parking

WSC grant application

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Dear members and fellow skiers, we are currently looking to improve facilities at Swinhope and are applying for grants to help us with this. We hope to purchase a newer Pistebasher which will require a new garage as well as widening bridges. In addition we are also hoping to improve the car parking facilities as this has been a nightmare in the past when we are busy. I have been asked to provide support for the project and also evidence that there is a need for these improvements. Proving economic benefit to the valley will also help as will showing that we are open to all irrespective of race, religion or disability. It would be very helpful if a few of you could write (email) me in support of this project. In particular if you have stayed in the area (ie B+B), eaten in or visited local pubs or shops or indeed if you are a local business that may have benefitted from our visitors then please add your support. The need for the Pistebasher is due to the age of our current one which is over 40 years old and on its last legs and also not powerful enough for the job and is essential for grooming the snow and hopefully a newer more powerful one will extend our skiing by being able to use snow harvested by our snowfencing. The new garage is required as the current one is far too small for a newer larger machine.
If we have anyone from different ethnic groups that have attended or any disabled skiers then a note from you would be great if you felt inclined.
Those of you who have experienced parking difficulties perhaps could write supporting the proposed improvements in parking arrangements ( I anticipate a few replies here!)

Thanking you in anticipation and hopefully our grant application will be successful.

Finally we are arranging a further 3 work parties in September - 2 on Sundays and 1 on a Wednesday - we will finalise the dates in the next day or so and I will email them out ASAP.

Work Party report

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Yet another successful work party was held on Sunday 1st August with 17 people attending (I think) and a lot of good work was done. Several people who attended are not members yet but hope to join this year and attendance at a work party will certainly help if we restrict membership numbers this year as seems likely.
Work that was completed this weekend include the building of new snowfencing and repairing of old fences, finishing the painting of the gable ends of the lodge, improvements to the route across by digging in field drains to try and dry it out and greasing the running gear. You will also notice some great new steps and a new stile by the carpark - this was prepared by Wayne at the previous work party and completed this weekend and a fantastic job has been done. Thank you to all who attended - the Sturley Family (Liz, Sean, Cameron, Angus + Hamish), the McCarties (Andrew, Amy, Matilda + grandpa Paul), Simon Palmer, Simon Donelly, George Dodsworth, Dennis Wilson and 1 other who's name I did not get - apologies. Please email me your name and I will include it in the next email!

The next bit of news is that we are soon to take delivery of a much newer and more powerful PisteBasher in the next week or so. Our current machine has served us very well but is getting a bit old now - we bought it in 1983 when it was several years old and whilst good at pisting the towlines is not very good at moving snow about which helps both prolong the skiing and improves the quality. The downside of this purchase is that we will have to widen several bridges as it is a lot wider than our old machine and also we will need to build a new garage to house it - yet more work and expense I am afraid but essential to keep the club moving in the right direction. We will be having more work parties, probably in September and I will keep you all posted.

Finally for all of you who can't wait for winter to arrive I have received this email below offering free skiing + snowboarding next weekend at Silksworth Dry Ski slope in Sunderland. Contact details below - if anyone attends and wishes to write a brief report I would be happy to publish it in my next email.

Work party Sunday 1st August

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

We are planning a work party a week on sunday (1st August) starting at 10am. I know many of you may be on holiday but we have quite a lot that needs doing so the more that can make it the better. Jobs needing doing include new snowfencing, repair of old snowfencing, timber treatment of the hut at the top of F2 and the last part of the Lodge, painting pylons, greasing the running gear and some drainage work. We are also hopefully getting a new pistebasher (new to us anyway) which will be vastly better than our existing one but is also a lot larger so we are also having to widen a few bridges so need plenty of muscle power (telegraph poles are not light!). We are also having to build a new shed to store the new PB in but we need planning permission before we can start on that.

Please come along, bring a picnic if the weather is nice and by all means bring your family and all your friends.

Membership renewals - these will be sent out in the autumn and I will also send them out via email. Please don't send them in yet using last years forms as some have been doing - these will be returned.

Hopefully se a few of you on sunday

Steve

England 1, Germany 4, Weardale Ski Club 29

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Despite the bad timing with the England v Germany game we got a superb turnout for the work party with 29 people attending and having a great (and very productive) day on the fell. The weather was fine and not too hot, the ground dry and a gentle breeze to keep the midges away! We managed to get all the hangars serviced, Oil tank replaced, new snow fencing erected and fallen down fences put back and repaired, pylons painted, ski + board racks built, table repaired, gates replaced, lodge cleaned and tidied, worn bearing on pylon replaced etc. I am sure I have missed a few jobs out. Can I thank everyone who turned up for supporting the club. Those attending today included several board members + Greg Court, Mike Lumb, Annie Bowe, Simon, Rosie, Isobel Donnelly, George + Tom Dodsworth, Kevin Moore, Graham Ferguson, Michael + Andrew Gill, Ian + Tricia Gill,
Richard Arrowsmith, Chris May, Chuck Paylor, Dave Reed, Christian Webster-Reed, Hugh Bence, Ronan ?, Will Barker and I suspect there may be one or two missing from this list. Thanks to all of you.

There will be more dates announced and we will try and get one or two midweek work parties as well so if you couldn't make it you will have plenty more chances.

Shame about the football, lets turn our attention to Andy Murray now then once he's out life can return to normal!

We will be holding more work parties and I will announce the dates later and also try and organise one or two midweek dates if possible as some of you have stated they would be easier to attend.

Snow chains - after this last season many of you may be looking for snow chains.David Reed has sent me this on eBay  - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Snow-Chains-Husky-9mm-KN30-/380199300334?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5885a4ecee
I cannot vouch for them but they look a good deal if you need a cheap pair.

Hopefully se more of you this Sunday!

Work party report

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A very successful work party was held today with a lot of good work done outside until mid afeternoon when the rain came after which we moved indoors. We have managed to build several sections of new snowfencing opening up a new route to the west, cut some reeds, painted some pylons, repaired some worn bearings on the lift and serviced some of the hangars. As usual, despite my pleas for help and all the empty promises people make in the winter, the response was fairly pathetic. Given that we have nearly 800 members we had a grand total of 6 volunteers and 4 of us from the committee. If you want a successful ski club we do need more support from the grassroot membership.
Great thanks to those who did turn up today and enjoyed a really good day - Wayne (great job on the stile + fell gate), Richard (snow fencing + hangar servicing), Amy + Richard (pylons) and Dave + Christian (pylons) - thank you from all of us.

Next work party Sunday 27th June. There will be more and we will try and arrange one or two mid week dates for those that cannot make weekends. Come on and give it a try - you never know you might actually have a great day!

I don't know if this will get to all the members but I have been wanting to say for ages how much we owe to Steve and the band of regular volunteers for giving us such a brilliant winter through their dedicated efforts.  Especially appreciated has been the flow of ,almost, daily updates of the excitement and acheivements, most heartening for those of us who would like to have  been there but couldn't for one reason or another.

So, let's do our bit , in return, on as many work weekends as possible. They are great fun and you will recognise "your bit " for years to come and get a lot of satisfaction out of it.
Regards to all,

Don't forget that the first summer work party is taking place this sunday from 10am. If you have enjoyed the skiing this year then this is your chance to put something back into the club as there is a huge amount of work to be done.  Please try and attend at least one work party this summer if you can - it is not a lot to ask and and after all if you can come up for a days skiing then surely an occasional work party is not too much!!! Work parties used to be compulsory but this was dropped a few years ago but the result has been that a very small number of us spend many many hours up there. We are especially keen to find people to "adopt" a piece of machinery or equipment and look after it, perhaps with 2 or 3 others. This could be one of the vehicles - Pistebasher, Rolba (tracked vehicle we use in summer and currently broken!),Quad bike, skidoo or one of the 2 engines, or the hangars which need annual servicing, or the buildings which need treating regularly, or the pylons that need painting, or the grass cutting, or even a section of old snow fencing that needs repairing or one of the many new sections we are planning to build, or the bridges that need maintaining or...........................   get the picture.

We are also looking for someone who is able to give our old skidoo a good overhaul - it is a Lynx and was badly damaged this season when it rolled over a few times. If anyone has experience with motorbikes and is able to offer a hand then please contact me. The bodywork also needs repairing so if anyone is good at this then again please step forward.

Hope to see many of you on Sunday???

Weardale Ski Club update

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

What a fantastic ski season we had this year - 45 days of some of the best snow seen for many years - lets hope that it is a sign of a change in weather patterns. We took all the hangars off the tow lifts on the 9th of May and the next day there was a significant covering of snow though it didnt last very long. We could have opened quite a few more days this season if it wasnt for a shortage of tow operators and we are keen to train new people up to help with the operation of the lifts - preferably people who live fairly close and are prepared to help run the tows and manage the lift queues etc. Any new operator would be trained up and would always work alongside an experienced operator who would have overall responsibility. This would also free up others to attend to jobs like pisting the runs, maintenance and ongoing repairs etc. If anyone is interested then we will offer training at forthcoming work parties talking of which we have 2 dates set at the moment - Sunday 6th + 27th June. Work parties start at 10 am and everyone is welcome and indeed we try to encourage as many as possible to attend. The club is all run by volunteers who put in many hours each year to ensure that you get to ski/board - this is your chance to put something back into the club. This year we have a huge amount of work to undertake and we will be having several more work parties - dates to be announced later via email and on the website. We need people with skills like electricians, mechanics but also need unskilled workers as a lot of the jobs simply require being able to hit a nail with a hammer or use a shovel.

Competition winner - the winner of the "Do's + Don'ts" competition in the last newsletter was won by Alistair Mackay who won a £50 travel voucher from Stanhope Travel - many thanks to Jon + Sam who give us good support and offer excellent value holidays (they say they can match internet prices). Congratulations to Alistair and look forward to hearing what you do with the vouchers.

Planning a marriage? If you are planning a marriage this year and are a keen skier or boarder BBC3 "Don't tell the bride" are planning a new series and are looking for a suitable couple to whom they will give £12000 towards their wedding. I don't know the details but presume it entails being filmed and shown on the series  and assume the wedding must take place in a ski resort but I could be wrong - if interested or know anyone that might be email weddings@renegadepictures.co.uk

Finally can I thank all those who have supported Weardale Ski Club this season - the snow was fantastic but created an enormous amount of work and strained the committee at times. The unprecedented influx of new members forced us to close membership and for a while stop day members - I apologise to anyone who we upset but the decision had to be made in the interests of longstanding members and also safety. We will be sending out renewals later in the year - via post, email and on the website. Please don't apply beforehand for membership, as some have already, until the renewal notice is sent out - any sent now will be returned.

Hopefully see many of you at the work parties

Don't put the skis away just yet!

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Just when we were thinking that the season had ended lo and behold we have some fresh snow. As I write this there is only an inch or so of wet stuff on the tops but more is predicted so we may possibly perhaps conceivably get some more skiing in this week - watch the webcam tomorrow morning and the weather forecasts and if we do plan to open I will send out an update.

In the meantime Scott from Sunderland (Silksworth) Sports Complex has offered WSC the following "managers special offer" - to take it up you must show proof of current WSC membership.

skiing wednesday 10th March

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Sorry about the later than planned report - just got back from a meal out. F1 electric problem fixed and tows ran all day today. Still good cover though thinning in places. The snow was very good early on but softened at lunchtime and became heavy mid afternoon leading to an early finish about 2:30pm. Everywhere is still skiable and especially good today were No 1 gully and the main gully where the snow remained great even at the close of skiing. The critical factor seems to be how cold the temperature gets at night - the colder the night the longer the snow stays good the next day - forecast -6 c tonight at Swinhope and blue skies and sunshine predicted tomorrow so looking good.

We are planning to open tomorrow (Wednesday) from about 10:30am and day members are welcome but please complete the day membership form before travelling. The road is clear.

Hopefully the snow will last till the weekend but we are very short on tow operators. Will any trained tow operator that is available this weekend please contact us in advance.

Skiing Tuesday 9th March

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Good news + bad news. Good news is that there is still plenty of snow and sunshine forecast for tomorrow. The freezing temperatures at night are keeping the snow but it was very hard this morning according to reports and not sure how much it softened up in the sun - not a lot on Sunday. The bad news is that F1 tow has an electrical fault so will only be running if we get it fixed. I have had an offer of help from some electricians and hopefully we will get things going but no guarantees and if you are planning travelling from a distance perhaps think again! If we get F1 fixed we will be running from 10:30 or as soon as possible.I will update this message tomorrow night with progress!

Bikini clad skiers (wanted)

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Well you can put Spring back on hold, my pond has frozen over again. Temperatures plummeted last night and todays the conditions couldn't have been any different to yesterday with very hard, in places icy, snow first thing today that really rattled your fillings (Stuarts comments suggesting he has more fillings than most). The predicted sun shone all day making for a fantastic day again with it feeling warm enough for one brave person to ski in a T-shirt and most of us without jackets on. It would have been warm enough for bikini clad skiing but where were you all - come on ladies! Surprisingly the predicted thaw never came and the snow remained hard and fast all day, only softening in a few places which means the snow has lasted better than predicted. This means we will hopefully be opening at least Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week but please check the answerphone before travelling. Tomorrow and Tuesday we plan to open at 10am and are open to Day Members but ask you to please print off and comolete the Day Members form before arriving. The road is currently clear apart from some patches of ice. Please do not approach on the road from the Teesdale side as the top section is still tricky and there have been a number of incidents this season. The only safe approach is from Daddry Shield on the A689.

Snow report from Saturday 6th March

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Spring is officially here - the ice has finally melted on my pond ater 4 months! Similarly the snow is beginning to disappear at Swinhope and we seem to be nearing the end of what has been the most memorable spell of skiing that I have known in my 23 years here. There is still plenty of snow up there and skiing first thing today was good, especially on the pisted runs, but became heavy later on and we closed up at about 2:30pm. All runs however are still open including the gully and the runs over to the est though today were slower and harder work.

We are planning to run tomorrow from about 10am - members only. A very cold night is forecast tonight with temperatures down to -5 or -6c so the snow should be well frozen by the morning and wall to wall sunshine is predicted. Should make for some good skiing in the morning but if the snow gets heavy we may well close early again at a similar time to today. The road today was completely clear.

Tomorrow is our 42nd day skiing and will be my 20th day. A quick calculation show that works out at £1.25 a day skiing for me - I think you might agree pretty good value. Last Tuesday was such a perfect day I am sure we could have charged £50 a day and nobody would have complained. When compared to £35 for 2 hours in the snowdome.......

Skiing this weekend 6/7th March

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

There still seems to be plenty of snow left so we are planning to run the tow both on Saturday and Sunday from about 10am. The road is currently clear but snow is forecast and we have been caught out recently with changing weather and road conditions so still come prepared for all possibilities!

Please remember we are only open to members at weekends and can I please ask members to wear their membership cards visibly if possible to make checking easier.

I will send a report out tomorrow night on Saturdays conditions as Sunday looks the better day according to the Met Office (if you believe them!). Make the most of what has been a superb season. It has to end sometime and who knows this could be the last weekend.

Snow report Wednesday 3rd March

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Another very good days skiing today with approximately 60-70 people in attendance. The slopes were very nicely groomed though a bit of spindrift was picked up with the wind mid morming which slowed the runs down a little. There is still very wide cover and prospects are very good for the weekend. Unfortunately due to a shortage of Tow Operators (most of us have well and truly used up our brownie points and will be repaying them all summer!) we will not be running the tows tomorrow (Thursday) and possibly not on Friday. I am sorry to disappoint people but we really have been stretched to bursting with all the ski days this season (40 so far) and need to get more people trained up to help us in future years if this weather is to be repeated.

The answerphone (01388 527527) will be updated on Thursday evening so if there is a chance of skiing on Friday we will announce it on the message. We are planning to run both Saturday and Sunday.

Please note that our neighbours at Yad Moss are planning to open tomorrow so if you had planned a trip then pay them a visit. If you present your WSC card you will get reduced day membership there. However beginner snowboarders may struggle with their tow lift so it is not advised to attend unless you are competent using a fast drag lift.

Snow report tuesday 2nd March - EXQUISITE

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

I start the email with an apology. I am sorry for those of you who could not make it today as you missed what can only be described as an exquisite day at Swinhope. 2 or 3 inches of fresh and unforecast powder fell overnight to give superb conditions with fluffy light powder over an excellent firm base. The sun shone continuously from 10am until 5:15pm when we closed the last tow and with no wind at all conditions were as close to alpine as I have known. As further proof of how good the weather was not only did my wife Alison turn up but also Mike's wife Eileen - both I am sure won't mind being described as fair weather skiers! Queues were non existant, there were no stoppages or breakdowns and the only problem I encountered was finding a place on the sundeck to eat my lunch! Managed a total of 5400 meters of ascent and descent today according to my altimeter which ranks with a good day in the Alps.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) - we plan to open from 10am. The F1 pistes have been groomed to European standards tonight and those who make it up tomorrow can thank Wayne for that. We are open to Day Members midweek and thanks to all those who came today with completed forms - it makes our life so much easier.

The road Having put on the answerphone that the road was clear there was an unpredicted fall of snow overnight which made the road tricky and necessitated 4WD or chains in the morning. By afternoon it had cleared but this just shows how variable the road conditions can be so always come prepared. Someone will always offer you a lift if you cannot get up the road but please park with consideration for others at the bottom and don't block any gates or entrances. Hopefully tomorrow the road will be clear but the above serves as a warning.

Parking - there is limited parking at the car park so please try and park at an angle close to other cars or dig in well off the road. Please Please do not obstruct the gate which is our only access to the fell for emergencies. We have placed cones there to ward people off but still didnt stop someone trying to park there today. The same goes for other gates.

Skiing Monday 1st March

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Another good weekend and we must be heading for a record number of days skied in a season - certainly in the 23 years I have been a member of WSC - I am sure someone will tell me otherwise if that is not the case! There has been some fresh snowfall this afternoon and the weather is forecasting Monday and Tuesday to be sunny and cold which should make for excellent skiing.

We are planning to open on Monday at 9:30am and also Tuesday at about 10am. We will make an announcement on Tuesday about the rest of the week but do have tow operators available for Wednsday if conditions permit which looks likely.

We are allowing Day Members to ski midweek so you are welcome to join us but please complete the Day Membership form which is attached to the email or available on the website. This should be completed before arriving and handed to a tow operator with the correct fee BEFORE skiing please and preferably with the correct money (makes our life a lot easier). Can I also remind members to try and display their membership cards please.

Happy skiing

Snow report from Saturday 27th Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A fresh fall of 10cm provided some great skiing today though towards the end of the day the bottom of F1 was getting a bit heavy. Hopefully it will freeze again overnight and provide good conditions for tomorrow. We are planning to open tomorrow from about 10:30am for our 37th day of the season. We are also planning to open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week weather permitting.

Please remember we are members only at the weekends but are happy to take day members for midweek skiing but only if you have completed a Day Membership form which can be downloaded from the website (www.skiweardale.com). Please hand this to a Tow Operator before skiing and please bring the correct day fee (£15 for an adult).

The road today had some fresh snow on it in the morning but was clear by afternoon and should be fine for tomorrow. There is however snow forecast tomorrow afternoon or evening so conditions could change.

Skiing this weekend 27th/28th Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

An inspection of the slopes this morning showed that quite a bit of snow had gone with the recent milder weather and the remaining snow was fairly wet. However since then there has been further snowfall and the webcam this afternoon showed an improvement in the cover.
We are planning to open both days this weekend from about 10:30am but cannot at this time predict how good it will be nor what the road will be like. The road was down to tarmac recently but clearly with the new snow this may have changed so please bring a shovel and pack your chains just in case.

Please remember weekends are Members Only so can I remind all members to show their cards and if possible display them outside your clothing to make life easier for the Tow Operators.

snow report tuesday 23rd Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Yet another glorious day today with about 80 - 100 people skiing + boarding in fantastic conditions. The snow seems to be lasting for ever and with temperatures rarely above zero the whole area remains skiable with a great base. There is heavy snow forecast tomorrow and also snow on Thursday and Friday so it looks like we won't be opening again until the weekend. However if conditions change and we decide to open I will send out another email. Many years ago some of the founder members skied on midsummers day (albeit a very short run of 13 turns if memory serves me) - lets see if we can beat that this year and ski into July!

We have opened again to Day Members for midweek (Monday to Friday) but weekends remain Members Only. We have a new system being trialed which makes life a lot easier for Tow Operators. This entails you having to print off a Day Membership Form from the website (www.skiweardale.com) and present this to a Tow Operator with the correct money BEFORE skiing. Please bring the correct money which makes life a lot easier (or alternatively you can donate the rest of that crisp £20 note to WSC!!).

Snow Report Sunday 21st Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A great weekend skiing was had by all with superb weather on Saturday with great snow cover. Today saw 2-3 inches of fresh powder but poor visibility and at times rather flat light but fantastic snow conditions. Everywhere is covered with a firm base and several cm of powder and it has been snowing all day lightly. The forecast is good for the next 2 days so we plan to open Monday and Tuesday from about 10:30am. If conditions change the answerphone will be updated (01388 527527).

The road was clear this morning but had a covering of snow by afternoon and was a bit slippery so please drive carefully, bring chains if you have them and a shovel.

We have had a chance to recover from the manic start to the season and the WSC Board have agreed to open to day members again for weekday skiing only. We wll review this policy in a few weeks and retain the option to close it again if we become too busy. I know this has upset a few people but we are a private club and have to look after our members interests first and foremost. To make life easier for Tow Operators, day members must print off an application form (attached to this email) or available from the website (www.skiweardale.com) and complete it beforehand. When you arrive at the slopes hand it to a Tow Operator with the correct money please BEFORE skiing. I apologise for some of the information requested (ie gender and ethnicity) but these are a requirement for our insurance through SnowSport England.

Can I remind members to display their cards please which again makes life easier for the tow operators - thanks.

Enjoy

Snow report from Saturday 20th Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Things just seem to get better each day and I am running out of superlatives. Today saw wall to wall sunshine, fantastic snow cover with an inch or 2 of powder on a firm base making superb skiing conditions. Everywhere is still skiable and I must have skied a dozen routes today that I have never skied before. There was no wind, the sundeck was crowded at lunchtime and everyone seemed to have a great day - approximately 100 people turned up and lift queues were virtually non existant.

We are planning to open tomorrow from 10-10:30 am

Please note we are only open to members. We will be asking people to display their cards again and if you do not wear them on the outside we will ask you to carry a marker of sorts that you are a member. No membership card = no ski.

The road was clear when we left tonight but has a tendency to ice up overnight but should be ok with a little care. You will need a shovel in case you have to dig in to park.

Skiing this weekend 20th/21st Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Apparently another fantastic day today with conditions that would have graced Courcheval. Looks good for the weekend and the road is pretty clear apart from a small patch of ice. There is the possibility of light snow overnight but nothing heavy forecast.
We are planning to open saturday and sunday from 10am.

Please note we are open to members only and can I ask members to display their cards as the tow operators will be checking throughout the day

We are expecting a busy day so there may be lift queues and parking will be limited. Please try and park as close as safely possible to the other cards and at a 45 degree angle to the fence. If there are no spaces left then dig in well off the road using the shovel that you remembered to pack! Please do not block any gates, especiallly the emergency access gate at the car park.

skiing friday 19th

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

We are planning to run the lifts on friday from 10:30am. There has been some fresh snow today which should mean excellent conditions tomorrow.
When last seen the road was clear but as conditions can change overnight still take care and bring a shovel and please remember to park close to the next car and close to the fence at a 45 degree angle.
We are still only open to members and are not taking any day members. Please can you ensure that you show your membership card have it displayed for the tow operator to see (otherwise he may need to keep asking you to show it as all you skiers look the same!!)

No skiing thursday

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

Yet another fantastic day today with great snow cover, no wind and apparently long spells of sunshine. A good way to celebrate our 30th day open this season.
The forecast is not so good tomorrow so we are not planning to open on Thursday but hope to do so on Friday. A message will be left on the answerphone with opening times and road conditions etc tomorrow evening - 01388 527527

snow report Tuesday 16th Feb

The Weardale Ski Club Ltd

A fantastic days skiing was had today with 2" fresh powder on a firm base - one of the best days of the season so far. All the gullies were skiable, Black Scar was skiable and over to the west there were large bowls of powder snow with all the streams filled in (as far as I could tell!!!). There was no wind, no queues, good visibility and the temperature didn't get above zero degrees all day. The forecast is for much of the same for the rest of the week so the snow should last until the weekend at least. The other good news is that the road is clear! There was some ice first thing this morning on the road which had gone by midday but could return overnight so take care and still bring a shovel just in case. We are planning to open tomorrow (Wednesday) from 10:30am and hope to open Thursday and possibly Friday this week.

We are still open only to members but the board are considering opening again to day members very soon and this will be announced via the website, the answerphone and also this email.
